Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg has set up shop in Memphis.
This, according to The Daily Memphian, which also reported that Bloomberg is the first 2020 presidential candidate to open up a campaign headquarters in Memphis.
“The Bloomberg Memphis office formally opens Downtown Thursday evening, Feb. 6, as other Democratic presidential contenders make post-Iowa caucus plans that could include Tennessee, which is a March 3 Super Tuesday primary state,” The Daily Memphian reported.
“Shelby County has the largest base of Democratic voters in the state and is expected to draw some attention from Democrats seeking the necessary delegates to become the party’s challenger to Republican President Donald Trump out of the summer political conventions.”
As the paper reported, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland has already endorsed Bloomberg.
As The Tennessee Star reported in December, Bloomberg spoke in Nashville that month about taking down U.S. Republican President Donald Trump and implementing more gun control.
In a speech at Woolworth on Fifth Avenue in December, Bloomberg said one of his top objectives was sending more Democratic politicians and “people who are good on guns and the environment” to Washington D.C. and the statehouses.
As The Tennessee Star reported last year, the Tennessee Secretary of State’s Division of Elections recently issued a petition to Bloomberg so his name can appear on Tennessee’s Democratic presidential preference primary ballot on March 3.
This, according to Tennessee Secretary of State spokeswoman Julia Bruck, who told The Tennessee Star the office issued the petition.
Earlier this month, Bloomberg has risen to third place in national polling for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, as reported by The Hill.
In the Morning Consult poll, Bloomberg ties with Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for third place with 14 percent. Second place is taken by Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) at 24 percent, with former Vice President Joe Biden narrowly taking first at 28 percent.
Bloomberg, whose personal wealth is estimated around $59 billion, has been spending hundreds of millions on advertising for his presidential campaign. After entering the race unusually late in November of last year, Bloomberg has decided to skip the traditional first four state contests (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina), in favor of focusing on the states scheduled to vote on Super Tuesday, which is on March 3rd. Among those states are California and Texas, the two largest states in the nation.
