U.S. Central Command said early Tuesday evening that it began launching a “series of powerful strikes” on Iran in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The earlier strikes were on tankers trying to transit the strait via a route Iran has warned ships against using. The Treasury Department on Tuesday revoked a waiver allowing Iran to sell oil and petrochemicals, prohibiting Iran from a significant revenue source negotiated during recent talks. A U.S. official said in a statement that “the MOU in effect with Iran is entirely performance-based,” and that “Iran’s actions in the Strait were wholly unacceptable to the United States and will be met with consequences.”

Iran’s top diplomat said Tuesday that Tehran would not resume negotiations if U.S. threats continue, after President Trump said the U.S. would “finish the job” if a peace deal isn’t reached. The talks are paused while Iran holds a weeklong funeral for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a strike on the first day of the war.
