California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday he’s under a Justice Department investigation that is targeting him for his presidential ambitions.
“Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us,” Newsom posted on X.
“They have not found a crime – they are simply trying to find one. He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President. He hates that I consistently call him out. He is simply the most corrupt President in American history. We have nothing to hide. Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere. The country is watching.”
Newsom is considered a top potential 2028 presidential candidate for his political party. He previously backed fellow Democrat President Joe Biden’s 2024 reeletion bid, until then-Vice President Kamala Harris took over at the top of the ticket.
The governor also said Monday the DOJ is “abusing the grand jury process” and said that federal agencies had sought information from family members and close associates.
“Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt president in American history,” Newsom also said.
“He is turning the levers of government into his own personal power ministries to reward cronies and to try to jail his opponents,” the governor added.
Newsom said Donald Trump puts anyone who challenges the president on a “hitlist.”
The governor said his wife “has done nothing wrong” except advocate for what she believes in.
Referring to himself, Newsom noted Trump “picked the wrong target.”
“His political operatives can take every record and read every page, but they will be looking in the wrong place,” Newsom said. “If they really want to find corruption, look no further than 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. ”
“Donald Trump is selling the presidency,” Newsom said.
