Five people were stabbed Sunday night inside New York City’s Penn Station, which is adjacent to the Madison Square Garden arena where President Donald Trump is slated to attend the NBA championship game on Monday, police said.
Police said one person was taken into custody, and it was believed to be a random attack.
One victim was seriously injured, two suffered moderate wounds and two others suffered minor injuries, and all were taken to Bellevue Hospital.
The incident occurred around 7 PM ET.
Penn Station is one of the country’s busiest train stations, the main hub for Amtrak in the Northeast.
It is adjacent to New York City’s most famous sports venue where the hometown Knicks are slated Monday to play Game 3 of the NBA championship series with the president in attendance.
To accommodate the president’s attendance at the game, the Knicks have announced that people will not be able to bring bags into the building and are asked to arrive two hours before the game to go through security measures, The New York Times reported. The outlet added that the Knicks will also not discontinue its watch party for the upcoming game.
Trump will not be the only politician attending the game. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced he will be going to the game, saying he bought his ticket for almost $1,000. Mamadani has a standing-room-only ticket, according to Yahoo Sports.
