A new congressional bill seeks to prevent biological males from joining an organization dedicated to the American Revolution.
Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced the Daughters of the American Revolution Membership Integrity Act, which would amend the Daughters of the American Revolution’s federal charter to ensure only biological females can become members.
Daughters of the American Revolution’s membership is limited to women who can prove their ancestors had ties to the American Revolution. The organization promotes “historic preservation, education and patriotism,” according to its website.
In 2023, the organization updated its bylaws to allow biological males who identify as female to join, which has been around since 1890.
The organization voted against a proposal to ban transgender members last month, according to The Washington Times. The proposal introduced by a group of members known as the Daughters Advocating for Restoration lost by a vote of 1,481 to 984.
Laura McDonald, a leader of the Daughters Advocating for Restoration, told the outlet that “the Daughters of the American Revolution, whose motto is ‘God, Home and Country,’ voted to reject a resolution that seeks to define the word ‘woman’ in our National Bylaws.”
“While admitting men with amended birth certificates is still a violation of the bylaws, I do believe the will of the assembly was heard,” she added. “We don’t know what the future holds or what God’s plan is, but we do know He has a plan and we trust Him.”
The Times reported an estimated five transgender females have joined the organization since its policy change.
In Blackburn’s bill proposal, female is defined as “a person who naturally has, had, will have, or would have but for a congenital anomaly or intentional or unintentional disruption, the reproductive system that produces, transports, and utilizes the large gamete (ova) for fertilization.”
According to the Tennessee senator, “the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded by women for women.”
“Its founders would be appalled that the organization is now allowing biological males to become members and undermine the legacy of real women who helped build our nation,” she said.
Besides Blackburn, Senators Katie Britt (R-AL), Mike Lee (R-UT), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) also sponsored the bill proposal.
Britt said the organization is “meant to honor the legacy of American women and their ancestors, not pander to a distorted sense of reality manufactured by far-left radical Democrats.”
“Whether in women’s locker rooms or time-honored organizations like DAR, it is our job to protect women and girls in spaces that are rightfully theirs. I’m proud to cosponsor this commonsense legislation,” she said.
According to Kramer, members of the organization “meticulously research their genealogy to prove direct lineage to the heroes of the past, drawing inspiration from the accounts of the women who came before them.”
“Their stories and heroism are rooted in their lives as women, and as a federally chartered organization, the Daughters of the American Revolution should reflect and honor this biological reality. Our legislation ensures membership eligibility is crystal clear,” he noted.
Heritage Action, Concerned Women for America Action Committee, American Principles Project, Senior Legal Counsel of Independent Women, and the Alliance Defending Freedom have all backed the bill proposal.
