The Dickson County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to the public Thursday to be aware of packages containing an unknown white powder sent by mail.
In a social media post, the Sheriff’s office said, “Many of you have seen this post being shared on Facebook, and we wanted to confirm that it is legit. If you receive a package like this, do not open and please contact us. The envelope has a white powder inside, which is being tested, but we’d rather be safe than sorry, so call us and do not open!”
According the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office, a county-area resident received a small package marked with the Amazon logo that resembled an Amazon gift card package. The package contained a white powdery substance, causing the resident to call the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the package.
Dickson County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Sgt. Jennifer Caruthers told The Tennessee Star, “We have only received one call so far, but we wanted to spread awareness if anyone else receives packages like this. We are still waiting for the testing of the white substance to be completed, but we will update the public when it is completed.”
In 2020, a similar package was sent to a local resident in Fayetteville. The police and firefighters were immediately called to the home to review the package after the resident discovered the powder-like substance. The substance was found to be non-toxic, causing the police to believe that it was sent to cause alarm to the resident.
The Dickson County Sheriff’s Office told The Star that they are continuing to test the contents of the package and will update the residents of Dickson County after the testing of the white powder is completed.
In the meantime, the law enforcement agency is encouraging residents to immediately call the sheriff’s office if they receive any suspicious package, and to leave the parcel unopened, in a secure location until officers arrive.
