Governor Lee Names Chris Hansen TDOC Interim Commissioner

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee appointed Christopher Hansen as interim commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) as the state’s correctional system faces scrutiny following a series of recent security and operational failures.

Lee announced Hansen’s appointment Friday, saying he will serve in the interim position while maintaining his current responsibilities as assistant commissioner of community supervision.

“Chris Hansen is a committed public servant with decades of experience in corrections and public safety,” Lee said in a statement. “His knowledge of the Tennessee Department of Correction makes him uniquely qualified to lead, and I am grateful for his willingness to serve Tennesseans during this transition.”

Hansen oversees the department’s probation and parole operations and leads approximately 1,100 employees statewide, according to a release from Lee’s office.

Since joining TDOC in 2023, he has overseen implementation of TN-STEPS, the department’s statewide evidence-based community supervision model, and efforts focused on “accountability, public safety, and successful reentry.”

Before joining TDOC, Hansen served as chief probation officer and director of the California Solano County Probation Department and as chief U.S. probation officer for the District of Nevada. He also held public safety leadership positions in Florida.

Hansen’s appointment comes amid several recent incidents inside Tennessee’s prison system, including the escape of convicted murderer Jacob Allen Morley from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Lake County, as well as a federal investigation into an alleged drug trafficking conspiracy involving inmates housed at separate Tennessee correctional facilities.

The department has also faced scrutiny following the September execution attempt involving death row inmate Christa Pike, who survived two doses of lethal injection drugs. Lee subsequently halted the state’s remaining scheduled executions for 2026.

Former TDOC Commissioner Frank Strada resigned in October following the botched execution attempt involving Pike, with Lee accepting his resignation three days after the September 30 incident.
