Former Speaker of the Tennessee House Beth Harwell has earned the endorsement of Maggie’s List in the race for Tennessee’s Fifth Congressional District. Maggie’s List is a federal political action committee (PAC) dedicated to electing fiscally conservative women.
In a release, Harwell said of the endorsement, “I’m honored to have the backing of such a prominent group, like Maggie’s List, that’s leading the way to get conservative women elected to Congress. We can restore America’s greatness by securing our border, lowering taxes, and ending the reckless spending that’s causing inflation.”
Maggie’s List Tennessee State Chair Sharon Boreing had high praise for Harwell, saying “It truly makes me smile to know that Beth Harwell, a life-long Republican and, the first female Speaker of the House for the state of Tennessee, a trailblazer for women, has been endorsed by Maggie’s List. This is what Washington, D.C. needs – a southern woman who knows how to work hard and has proven her leadership through her many accomplishments. Beth Harwell will get the job done for such a time as this.”
Former Speaker of the Tennessee House of Rep Beth Harwell served in prior roles as state chair of the Tennessee Republican Party as well as State House Republican Caucus Whip and Campaign Committee Chair. During Harwell’s tenure, the Republicans took control of the state Senate and state House. In 2011, Harwell became the first female Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
Harwell previously told The Tennessee Star, “I think I’m the only person in the field that has a proven record of success with a conservative fiscal record. I’m the only candidate who’s given parents the ability to have more of a voice in their children’s education. As Speaker, I eliminated taxes and balancing our budgets. We can all agree that those qualities are desperately needed in Washington, D.C.”
In 2019, Beth was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve on the board of the Tennessee Valley Authority, which covers Tennessee and surrounding states.
Harwell has called Tennessee home since moving to Nashville to attend Lipscomb University for college over thirty years ago. Following graduation, she moved on to Vanderbilt University for her PhD. Beth is currently serving as a distinguished visiting professor at Middle Tennessee State University.
Maggie’s List is described by the Harwell campaign release as a Federal PAC that was created “to raise awareness and funds to increase the number of conservative women elected to federal public office. Since 2010, this group of dedicated women have had an outstanding record for endorsing successful candidates for United States Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.”
Harwell is running for the GOP nomination for Tennessee’s Fifth Congressional district. The primary is scheduled for August 4, 2022.
Other candidates in the TN-5 GOP field include former Brig. Gen. Kurt Winstead, California native Robby Starbuck, Tennessee newcomer Morgan Ortagus, Natisha Brooks, and Stewart Parks.
Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles, state Senate aide Tres Wittum, and former Williamson County GOP Chair Omar Hamada are potential candidates. Several others are collecting petitions as well.

Whatever happened to the moderate (and even to a smaller handful of liberal and leftist Republicans) that used to exist in Tennessee during the pre-1964 era? Now, Tennessee has fallen under the control of extreme right-wing politicians who want to use big state government to harm those whom they don’t like instead of serving ALL Tennesseans? I used to occasionally vote for Republicans in Tennessee at the bottom of the ticket, but not any more–let alone at the TOP of the ticket!
What happened William is that Democrats nominated Obama with his desire to “fundamentally change” this country and that was about the last straw to finally convince native born Tennesseans that this was not their daddy and mommy’s Democratic Party while the Republican Party’s move to the right made it that more attractive. In addition, there is the continuing migration of refugees from NY, NJ, California, Illinois etc. who are determined not to let this state deteriorate into the hell holes they came from and PRESTO! people with your ideology have become a rather insignificant minority in this state. You’re a Tennessee anachronism William, I’m sorry.

Former Speaker Harwell is a “squishy Haslam” Republican! She put the Chamber of Commies ahead of average Tennesseans! She went along with the gas tax increasing IMPROVE Act even when we had a billion-dollar surplus thinking that Haslam would support her support in her run for Governor, nope! ‘Cuz he was behind his boy Boyd!
Tennessee and this Country doesn’t need any more “squishy” Republicans getting promotions! We need representative with strong morals that align with the Constitution, NOT people who blindly follow RINO leadership! Don’t bother talking to me about this unless you can find a Lauren Boebert, or a MTG.
Wouldn’t it be preferable for the good ladies of Maggie’s List to try to elect the most proven reliable conservative in the race PERIOD and if Andy Ogles runs that won’t be Beth Harwell.
You mean the guy from Maury Co that raised taxes? And has a 2022 budget that spends $17 million in deficits that has to draw from county savings? That guy is a conservative?
