Rep. Mark Green Introduces Legislation to Require Supermajority Support for Tax Increase

U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07) introduced legislation on Thursday to require a 3/5 supermajority vote to approve any tax increases.

“It’s Tax Week and the Biden Administration is hard at work raising your taxes and driving your jobs overseas,” the statement released by Green’s office said.

Green’s proposed legislation is spurred by recent proposals offered by President Joe Biden. Biden has called for a dramatic increase in taxes as a part of his infrastructure bill — the “American Jobs Plan.” The proposal sends taxpayer funds to multiple categories outside the traditional definition of infrastructure — including child care and housing.

“President Biden is proposing a massive tax hike as part of the American Jobs Plan that will leave our business tax rate higher than that of Communist China. A supermajority of senators and representatives elected by the people should be required to give consent to any action like this that would impose such a crushing burden on American jobs and free enterprise,” Green continued.

Biden’s plan calls for multiple reversals of policies implemented under President Donald Trump’s administration. Specifically, the tax hikes undo the cuts completed under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which helped the American economy bloom.

Additionally, some economists say these tax increases may slow economic growth after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Under the historic reforms passed by Congress in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, we saw a renewal of prosperity for all Americans with significant tax relief for American families and businesses,” Green added.

Rep. Green has been a consistent critic of President Biden’s policies since he took office. Previously, due to lack of action from the Biden administration, Green proposed a bill to sanction Russia for their invasion of the Donbas region of Ukraine.

Why empty? An empty gesture would be to shrug and do nothing. The only way a senator has of changing a bad policy is to introduce a piece of legislation that would halt that policy or make it unlikely to get Congressional approval. Representative Green has done this. We should at least applaud the effort.

I consider it empty because it is a given that such a bill will never be put on the calendar by Pelosi. I am a fan of Rep Green but I consider this an empty effort because he knows it is dead before it even arrives.

    A nice but empty gesture.
