Rutherford County Public Works Committee Selects Engineering Firm to Design New Municipal Solid Waste Transfer Station

The Rutherford County Public Works Committee recently selected TriAD Environmental Consultants, Inc. of Nashville, to begin designing a municipal solid waste transfer station. A transfer station is a facility where solid waste is delivered and prepared for transport to its final destination.

Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr announced the hiring of TriAD in a press release, acknowledging that “solid waste issues have plagued Rutherford County for some time.” The newly-hired design study by Rutherford County is not to exceed a dollar amount of $200,000, according to Carr’s office.

The hiring of the engineering firm is the first step in “solving the solid waste problem” at Middle Point Landfill, which was one of the major issues Rutherford County voters wanted solved during this year’s general election, Carr told The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy earlier this year. Middle Point Landfill in Rutherford County takes in 4,500 tons of trash daily, with 70 percent coming from Davidson County.

“I made a promise to the people of Rutherford County that we would solve the solid waste problem at Middle Point Landfill and within 90 days of taking office we have taken a substantial step,” Mayor Carr said.

Rutherford County Public Works Committee Chairman Mike Kusch also stated, “Middle Point Landfill will be closing at some time in the near future, and we need to prepare for life after closure. That first step is right now with the planning & building of this initial transfer station. Our hope is to continue to review different technologies that we can partner with that will convert our household solid waste into something that is useful such as an energy or fuel source that diverts this waste from somewhere other than landfills.”
