Scott DesJarlais and Phil Roe Speak Out on Iranian War Powers Resolution

Two Tennessee congressmen have weighed in on the Iranian War Powers Resolution.

This is a Democrat-led resolution that could prevent the President from protecting American troops and civilians against Iranian aggression, according to U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-TN-04).

“Today’s non-binding resolution, which will never become law, was another symbolic gesture from the Resistance. Unfortunately, it could be construed as a gesture of support for the Iranian regime which, if it did become law, would prevent the President from acting quickly to protect Americans and our allies, as he did this week, decisively,” he said in a statement.

“Gen. Soleimani was a battlefield commander responsible for the deaths of hundreds of U.S. troops, and a legitimate military target, undoubtedly planning more attacks like the recent one on our embassy. There must never be another Benghazi. The President has made clear we will protect our diplomats. However, considering Soleimani’s long record of terrorism across the globe, and Iran’s constant belligerence, our response so far has been measured, unlike today’s incoherent resolution.”

U.S. Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN-01) also sent out a press release on the matter.

“I believe the President was right on the mark eliminating the threat posed by known terrorist Qasem Soleimani, General in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was responsible for the death of over 600 Americans. President Trump acted decisively upon intelligence from the best advisors available, and he used his executive powers to do what previous presidents did when presented with a similar decision to protect American safety,” Roe said.

“Instead of supporting our president’s act of strength, House Democrats passed a resolution that undermines his efforts to protect Americans and our allies, and they turned a military decision into a political messaging point. Instead of our country being shown as one unified force, we are now presented to our enemies as divided. Passage of this shortsighted resolution is not acting in America’s best interest.”
