U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper Supports Statehood for Washington, D.C.

U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN-05) told his constituents in an emailed newsletter this week that he favors statehood for Washington, D.C.

“The House Oversight and Reform Committee passed a bill on Wednesday that would make Washington, DC the 51st state,” according to Cooper’s newsletter.

“The bill passed the House last Congress but the Republican-led Senate never allowed it to come to the floor for a vote. The bill, which is expected to pass the House, is scheduled for a vote next week.”

Congress.gov lists U.S. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton as the bill’s primary sponsor. The bill, if enacted into law, would admit the District of Columbia into the United States as the state of “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth.”

Cooper’s newsletter said the congressman voted for the bill in the U.S. House Oversight Committee.

“Today I joined @OversightDems in voting for Rep. @EleanorNorton’s #DCStatehood bill in committee,” Cooper wrote.

Yes, Every Kid

“I voted for the bill last year when it passed the House and I look forward to supporting it again when it comes to the floor.”

Norton’s bill has several co-sponsors, including:

• U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-09)

 • U.S. Rep. David Scott (D-GA-13)

• U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA-02)

• U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA-04)

• U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA-05)

• U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA-06)

• U.S. Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (D-GA-07)

As The Tennessee Starreported this month,Cooper said U.S. President Joe Biden’s executive plans on gun control will save lives.

Cooper, in a press release, went on to say that this is especially true “here in Middle Tennessee where our governor just signed a bill to allow the carrying of firearms without a permit.”

“President Biden’s executive actions will invest in evidence-based community violence intervention, provide model red flag laws for states, and begin new initiatives to track gun trafficking and ‘ghost guns’ that lack a serial number,” Cooper said.

Last month Cooper said he joined the U.S. House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in a letter asking Biden to use his authority under The National Firearms Act to regulate the sales of concealable assault-style weapons.

Cooper also joined Democratic Members of Congress in a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) last week asking him to bring the expanded background check bills for gun sales up for a vote in the U.S. Senate. The bills, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021, passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month. Cooper said they will eliminate loopholes and expand background checks on all gun purchases.

  1. Tim Price

    He’s a insane liberal!

What else needs to be said!

  2. Nancy

Has the taxpayers in Davidson county had enough of John and Jim Cooper? Little Bob Cooper the Metro legal Director is now using taxpayers money to keep the roll back of the 34% property tax increase off the ballot for the voters to approve! I call this voter suppression! It is time for the Cooper dynasty to end! God bye little Bob, Jim and John! Tennessee legislature please split Davidson county up 4 ways like Shelby county has been for years!

  3. 83ragtop50

I would comment on Cooper but what is the use? He is so far left that he is out of sight. Thanks you Nashville for this idiot being in office.

  4. Jim Cooper has made it clear: that he supports anything that would promote the destruction of the Republic! A one party Democrat Socialist/Marxist rule is his desire! It along with eliminating the Electoral College and Packing the Court with Activist Marxists would insure the death of Western Christian Civilization, our America! The Democrat Party including Cooper now stand directly opposed to and is working for the destruction of normalcy, morality, the family unit, Freedom of Speech, our Second Amendment Rights and the entire Bill of Rights, the Constitution, our National Security and border, our children’s’ minds and bodies,…or every bit of the fabric that is America! Anyone who supports and votes for Cooper, also wants the destruction of America!

This is absurd and ridiculous, but hey, two can play this silly game. If the Democrats think that they can just take over permanent control of the Federal government, by fabricating States out of thin air, let’s make every 100 square mile tract of land a State! The last time I looked at a voter map, Red areas out numbered Blue areas almost exponentially.

The bottom line is that J & J Coopers are leftist Napoleonic elitists who fully believe that they should be able to tell me and you how to live our lives. They both need to be “tarred and feathered”, and “ridden out of town on a rail.”

Rep. Jim Cooper is bad for Tennessee, and bad for the future of America as we, once upon a time, knew how great America was, and could be.

Now, Cooper supports a Presidency that may do too much damage to the USA, for the next President to repair. We wait & see. However, imagine… no more U.S. Reserve Currency Status.

Is the next President prepared, for that!? Is everyone prepared for that inevitability? Is everyone’s money diversified properly, to ensure gain/break-even, during such an occasion? Did everyone invest in The War Stocks, the day after Biden flipped that election? I did. Does everyone own farmable land? I do. Is everyone exercising ALL their Rights, to ensure personal safety, vocality, etc.? Oh, yeah, I am.

Sorry Ukraine. Well, no, actually; I did not vote for this weak president, so, I have no responsibility for what may happen, NOTHING to be sorry FOR. Only Biden’s voters (including his direct supporters, like Jim Cooper) do. And, oh, how the Democrats love war. Hmm, S. Asia, wow, yeah, the CCP… I may make a ton of profit, off your sorrow… but… “ya gotta do, what ya gotta do”, $aid $ome Democrat politician, like Rep. Jim Cooper.

Wow, it’s too bad there are riots in only your Democrat neighborhoods and Democrat cities. And it’s too bad there WILL be MANY more. It’s especially too bad, so many voters were that stupid. Oh, well. But what you get what you vote for, and you all voted for THIS. Wow, Nashville, and Memphis… you are in for a treat, the next four years. Have fun rebuilding, over and over and over, again.

    PS: Oh, and THEN there’s The Pentagon’s UFOs! ~ Whew, did I mention, this is gonna be a FUN Summer!! {rhetorical!}

PPS: If printing infinite fiat-currency, like the U.S. Dollar, was the answer to everything… why has no country EVER succeeded before? And what makes our idiot leaders think they can? ~ Our leaders have printed 78% of all the US Dollars EVER printed, in all time… within the last 12 months. (Uh, oh!)

  7. Rick

More Cooper gutter trash! Lipless swamp scum!

  8. gordon

of course he would, that would give dims two more senators.

if jim cooper supports it, it is a bad idea.

  9. David Blackwell RN, BSN

Red states simply need to break in half and double their Senate Seats.

  10. Lobo

In other words, the U.S. constitution, and the reasoning for D.C. to remain a neutral ground means nothing to him.. Gaining extra democrat seats is the one thing that is important to him.
