WSMV: ‘Questions Raised About Nashville Mayor’s Relationship With Officer in Charge of Security Detail’

UPDATE 4:49 pm:

WSMV is reporting that “The News 4 I-Team has uncovered questions of the relationship between Nashville Mayor Megan Barry and her head of security.”

In a story that broke at 2:48 pm but added a significant update at 4:02 pm, WSMV reported:

News 4 reported on Tuesday night that Sgt. Rob Forrest had abruptly resigned his position.

The News 4 I-Team has heard from multiple sources – Metro Council members, former Council members and lawyers – that Forrest’s resignation from the police force after 31 years was tied to his relationship with Barry.

News 4 contacted Penny Forrest, Rob Forrest’s wife, on Wednesday afternoon. She referred questions to her attorney.

When asked whether her husband had a relationship with Barry, she responded, ‘You need to ask that question to Mayor Barry.”

The News 4 I-Team has reached out to the Mayor’s office for several hours on Wednesday. The only response has been that she is set to make some kind of statement or response later Wednesday.

There have been various reports that Mayor Barry’s office will issue a statement this afternoon, and other reports that she will hold a press conference at 5 pm.

The Tennessee Star asked a spokesperson for the Mayor’s office if a press conference will be held today, but has received no response.

Social media in Middle Tennessee has been abuzz with rumors about the situation, but, so far, Mayor Barry has offered no comment.

The timing of the story is not a plus for the mayor, since the Nashville Metro Council is scheduled to hold a third and final reading on February 6 on whether or not to hold a referendum in May on her proposal to increase sales taxes dramatically to fund a proposed $9.2 billion transit plan that a number of transportation experts have panned.

Well funded PACs have been formed on either side of the issue.

UPDATE:

Tennessee Star reporter Laura Baigert, who was at the offices of Metro Nashville government this afternoon, says she was told by a Metro Nashville employee that a press conference will be held there at 7 p.m. tonight.
