Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said she supported the Senate Judiciary Committee advancing Todd Blanche to serve as the next attorney general.
On Tuesday, the committee voted 12-10 along party lines to have Blanche be the next attorney general. After passing the committee, all U.S. senators will vote on whether Blanche will become the attorney general. Senators will take the vote to confirm Blanche as early as Saturday.
Republicans have the majority in the Senate with 53 senators, and Democrats have only 47. Vice President JD Vance would cast the deciding vote in the event of a tie. If he is approved by the Senate, he would replace Pam Bondi, who served as attorney general for almost 14 months.
Blanche, who is currently serving as the acting attorney general, won over Republican holdouts on the Senate Judiciary Committee such as Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC).
Some of the demands these senators had before offering their support for him included meeting with alleged Jeffrey Epstein victims and assuring the Department of Justice (DOJ) would not pursue the anti-weaponization fund.
According to Blackburn, as acting attorney general, Blanche “has already proven he will hold fraudsters accountable for stealing billions of taxpayer dollars, crack down on violent crime in cities like Memphis, and restore a one-tiered system of justice after four years of the Biden DOJ’s corruption under Merrick Garland.”
“The American people sent President Trump back to the White House to return the DOJ to its core mission of enforcing the rule of law, and I am confident Todd Blanche will continue to deliver on that mandate once he is confirmed as Attorney General,” she added.
In addition to Blackburn, Senator John Curtis (R-UT) came out in support of Blanche.
“After having robust discussions with Todd Blanche and following his nomination process in the Judiciary Committee, I will support his confirmation,” Curtis said. “I’ve been pleased with his receptivity and understanding of the issues raised by my colleagues and me, including the anti-weaponization fund and a number of Utah-specific priorities.”
“I look forward to working with him once confirmed,” he added.
