John Rose Reported Holding Up to $500,000 in Google Parent Stock at End of 2024, then Selling $1 Million to $5 Million in June 2025

Rep. John Rose

Federal financial disclosure filings submitted by U.S. Representative John Rose (R-TN-06) appear inconsistent, with his 2024 annual report listing between $250,001 and $500,000 in Alphabet Class A stock on December 31, and a transaction report filed last year stating he sold between $1 million and $5 million of the same stock from the same brokerage account on June 3, 2025. Alphabet is the parent company of Google.

Two more items on the June 2025 report appear to indicate Rose sold between $1 million and $2 million worth of shares of the American Funds SMALLCAP World Fund Class A mutual fund, while his 2024 annual disclosure showed he held between $500,001 and $1 million worth of shares in the fund.

The Tennessee Star contacted Rose’s congressional office on Friday to ask whether the June 2025 transactions involving Alphabet and the mutual fund were entered correctly, but did not receive a response before press time.

If the entries were reported correctly, The Star asked Rose’s office how his brokerage account came to hold the additional Alphabet stock. The Star also asked whether Rose intends to file an amended report if the transactions were entered incorrectly.

The June 2025 document only reports transactions that occurred on June 3. Rose’s annual report for 2025 could provide additional insight into trades involving his brokerage account and mutual fund shares, but the fourth-term congressman filed for an extension on April 9.

His request shows Rose requested, and received, the full 90-day extension Congress can provide. This means his annual report for 2025 will be due on August 13, 2026, which is exactly one week after Republicans in the Volunteer State vote in the August 6 primary that will decide their nominee to become Tennessee’s next governor.

A recent calculation estimated Rose’s net worth is about $55 million. He was identified as one of four principal shareholders who sold the assets of the information technology-certification test-preparation company, Transcender, for a total of $55 million in cash in 2000.

Rose’s 2024 disclosure showed he owns 92 percent of Smith Fork Ventures, which is valued between $5 million and $25 million, and owns Boson Holdings, which in turn owns Boson Software and Boson Training. The disclosure also shows Smith Fork owes Rose between $5 million and $25 million in a demand note.

The disclosure also valued Rose Farm at between $5 million and $25 million.

Recently unearthed campaign filings revealed that Rose donated more than $19,000 to Democrats, including state lawmakers who worked to pass a statewide income tax, between 1998 and 2010. Election records also reveal he voted in three Democratic primary elections over the same period, including during the 2004 presidential election.
