According to several reports, officials are investigating potential sightings of Brian Laundrie on the Appalachian Trail near the Tennessee border with North Carolina.
Laundrie, 23, is the prime suspect in the slaying of his girlfriend, Gabby Petito. The pair was on a cross country road trip when Petito disappeared and was later found dead in Wyoming on September 19.
Laundrie was thought to have slipped into the Carlton Reserve, a vast 24,000 acre swath of wilderness in Florida. While authorities are still searching there, Haywood County Sheriff’s Office in Western North Carolina fielded calls Monday claiming that he had been spotted on the Appalachian Trail.
“We have received a number of calls regarding the sighting of Brian Laundrie over the past several days, each one being investigated thoroughly and areas of concern searched, but all to no avail,” the sheriff’s office reportedly said. “We will continue to respond and fully investigate all calls for service related to the nationwide search for Mr. Laundrie within our jurisdiction.”
The sheriff’s office has reportedly fielded at least 10 tips from members of the public claiming to have spotted Laundrie.
One of the people who reported a sighting of Laundrie to police in both North Carolina and Tennessee, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was Dennis Davis.
Davis said he chatted with a man fitting the description of Laundrie, but did not fully recognize him until he looked up photos of the suspected murderer.
“There is no doubt about it. That was Brian Laundrie I was just talking to. 100%. Not a doubt in my mind,” Davis told Fox News.
The FBI is leading the manhunt for Laundrie.
Spanning more than 2,100 miles from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world.
