Ohio Senate Candidate J.D. Vance Endorses Constitutional Amendment to Keep Supreme Court Justices at Nine

J.D. Vance, an Ohio Senate candidate in the GOP primary to replace Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), pledged to support a constitutional amendment that would keep the number of justices on the Supreme Court at nine.

“I proudly support the Keep Nine Amendment, so that the integrity and independence of the U.S. Supreme Court is preserved and continued. The Democrats are trying to undermine and radically transform our nation’s highest court, which is one of the pillars of our democracy, into a partisan entity controlled exclusively by them,” Vance said in a statement

The pledge comes in response to growing calls by many leaders within the Democratic Party to abolish the Senate filibuster and to expand the number of justices in order to receive rulings that are more favorable to their beliefs.

“Today’s ruling is another blow to voting rights. We have no time to waste to protect the right to vote. We must abolish the filibuster and pass the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act. And we must expand the Supreme Court,” Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) tweeted after a recent Supreme Court ruling.

The “Keep Nine Amendment” would prevent leaders from both expanding or decreasing the number of members on the high court in an effort to prevent dramatic swings of partisanship.

“The radical Democrat court packing scheme would do irreparable harm to the American public’s faith in the Supreme Court as a non-partisan entity and as the next U.S. Senator from Ohio, I’m committed to leading the battle against it,” Vance continued of the potential expansion.

After signing the pledge, Vance becomes the first candidate in a crowded and growing Republican field to make the declaration to voters.
