The principal of Madison East High School has been reassigned to a different position within the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), according to a release from the school district on Wednesday.
Sean Leavy, the former principal, will serve as the director of Secondary Multi-Tiered Support and Scheduling, after numerous protests regarding his handling of sexual assault allegations.
“This change reflects MMSD’s commitment to ensure our school district has a leadership team who are in roles that best optimize their experience and skills to move MMSD forward toward reaching our Strategic Framework goals,” MMSD spokesman Timothy LeMond wrote in an emailed statement.
Repeatedly, students have exercised their right to protest, calling for action from the leaders of the school and district. The students held a demonstration before school and joined together for a walk-out from their classes.
Before being reassigned, Leavy apologized for his decisions in a letter to parents.
He described that his actions “left some students and staff feeling dismissed, upset and unsupported.” He added,”My response was too technical and did not meet the needs of our students and staff.”
The actions of the students mirror a national sentiment that has led to concerned parents and students speaking out against school officials.
For example, Loudoun County, Virginia, has been the center of demonstrations from parents against various school policies. Previously, hundreds of concerned parents in the county showed up to a school board meeting to demonstrate their objection to teaching Critical Race Theory (CRT) and multiple policies regarding transgender students in the school system.
However, the members immediately shut down the discussion. Many parents continued to object, and at least two of the worried parents were arrested.
Additionally, a report from The Daily Wire detailed that a student was sexually assaulted in the girls’ bathroom. The father of the student claimed that the school district attempted to hide the incident.
Furthermore, a judge found the 15-year-old student guilty of sexually assaulting a female classmate in the school bathroom.
