Wisconsin Representatives Join Call for Biden to Fire Education Secretary Miguel Cardona

Several Wisconsin Representatives joined the call for President Joe Biden to fire Education Secretary Miguel Cardona for his involvement in a letter that labeled concerned parents “domestic terrorists.” The letter was spearheaded by Representative Lisa McClain (R-MI-10).

As was reported by The Wisconsin Daily Star, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was made by a watchdog group, Parents Defending Education. An October email was obtained featuring “NSBA Secretary-Treasurer Kristi Swett explicitly saying that then-interim CEO Chip Slaven ‘was writing a letter to provide information to the White House, from a request by Secretary Cardona.’”

The letter from McClain and others reads, “In light of the recent revelation that the Secretary of Education solicited the now infamous letter from the National School Boards Association (NSBA) comparing parents who protested at school board meetings to domestic terrorists, we demand you immediately fire Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.”

The demand letter is signed by Representatives Glenn Grothman (R-WI-06) and Thomas Tiffany (R-WI-08), along with 54 other members of Congress.

Cardona reportedly awarded Viola Garcia, a signer of the initial letter about “domestic terrorism” as well as the president of the NSBA, with an appointment to the National Assessment Governing Board.

The letter goes on to reference Biden’s mantra of unity, saying, “Anyone who believes an individual that equates parents voicing their concerns at school board meetings to domestic terrorists brings a necessary perspective to a national education board, is someone who is unbecoming of a role in an administration which has pledged to foster a path forward to unify and heal our country.”

They explain that they believe that Secretary Cardona has “demonstrated a complete lack of judgement, a divisive approach to his position, and a betrayal of the public trust.” The letter continues, saying that Biden’s “pledge to help bring unity will ring even more hollow if Secretary Cardona continues in his current position.”

The letter asks that Biden fire Cardona effective immediately.
