The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) quietly revised its national crime data for 2022, showing that violent crime actually increased instead of the decrease initially reported, according to RealClearInvestigations (RCI).
The FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) initially showed a slight 2.1% decrease in violent crime from 2021 to 2022, however the revision, which was only briefly mentioned on its website, shows an increase in violent crime of 4.5%, according to RCI. The revision comes after the release of the 2023 UCR data in September, which showed a 3% decrease in national violent crime, according to an FBI press release.

CBS News The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that a top election official had no authority to declare unconstitutional a state law that restored the voting rights of those who have been convicted of a felony, issuing a decision with implications for the upcoming election. In July, Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen ordered county election officials to reject voter registrations of those with felony convictions, citing an opinion by Attorney General Mike Hilgers. That opinion, which Evnen had requested, deemed as unconstitutional a law passed this year by the Legislature immediately restoring the voting rights of people who have completed the terms of their felony sentences. Evnen’s order could have prevented 7,000 or more Nebraska residents from voting in the upcoming election, the American Civil Liberties Union said. Local election officials in Georgia cannot delay or refuse to officially certify election results, according to a state court ruling on Monday.
“Election superintendents in Georgia have a mandatory fixed obligation to certify election results,” wrote Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney in the ruling. “Consequently, no election superintendent (or member of a board of elections and registration) may refuse to certify or abstain from certifying election results under any circumstance.”

The decision sends the case back down to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals to be reconsidered, with the Supreme Court declining to hear arguments, according to the court orders. The court pushed back against the Third Circuit’s initial judgement in June that the law violated the Second Amendment by arbitrarily excluding some adults from carrying just for being under 21 and having no historical precedent, according to the decision handed out by Third Circuit Judge Kent Jordan.

Tennessee civil rights lawyer Daniel Horwitz is suing the U.S. Court for the Middle District of Tennessee over a 2022 gag order demanding he cease commenting publicly about a case or be held in contempt of court, arguing a rule cited by the federal court too broadly restricts attorney speech.

Deputies working for the Riverside County sheriff’s office arrested a man, identified as Vem Miller, and subsequently discovered a shotgun, loaded handgun, and high-capacity magazine in his car about a quarter mile from the entrance to Trump’s campaign rally in Coachella Valley. Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco, who endorsed Trump publicly in June, said Miller’s car, identified as a black SUV, had a fake license plate that was unregistered and possessed several phony passports and driver’s licenses with different identities, as well as what Bianco described as a fake press pass.

Jeffry Umaña Muñoz is an illegal alien who attended UCLA as an undergraduate and was denied employment at the university bookstore and cafeteria. Discussing the lawsuit at a press conference, he said, “I experienced firsthand the pain and difficulty of being denied the right to on-campus employment at my university.” He continued, “At the crux of this case are thousands of undocumented students and our families who simply want the freedom to study, work, and fully contribute to our universities.” The other plaintiff, Iliana Perez, is an illegal alien who is a DACA recipient. The Verge Google plans to buy electricity from next-generation nuclear reactors. It announced the deal yesterday, which it says is the world’s first corporate agreement to purchase electricity from advanced small modular reactors (SMRs) that are still under development. Google inked the deal with engineering company Kairos Power, which plans to get its first SMR up and running by 2030. Google agreed to purchase electricity from “multiple” reactors that would be built through 2035. Google needs a lot more clean energy to meet its climate goals while pursuing its AI ambitions. New nuclear technologies are still unproven at scale, but the hope is that they can provide carbon pollution-free electricity while solving some of the problems that come with traditional nuclear power plants. A vast majority of voters want policies and procedures in place to guarantee the integrity of elections, according to new polling.
That includes 86 percent of those surveyed who agree that election officials should have access to all necessary information to verify that the number of ballots cast matches the number of voters, and 85 percent who say that election officials should verify the accuracy of the information they receive before signing off on certifying election results.
