Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the military to stop accepting transgender applicants in a memo last Friday.
Hegseth’s directive, which was sent to senior DoD leaders, commanders of the combatant commands, and others, comes on the heels of multiple executive orders from President Donald Trump regarding the reversal of the Biden administration’s 2021 move to allow transgender people to serve, which overturned Trump’s ban from 2017 during his first term.
“Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for service members are paused,” the memo said.
