Philadelphia canceled its Friday’s Fourth of July parade over concerns about high temperatures, and other holiday events in other communities are being canceled or rescheduled.
Temperatures reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Philadelphia on Friday, and the organizers of the city’s Salute to Semiquincentennial Parade said that their responsibility toward the safety of expected crowds comes first, CBS News reported.
“As much as this decision pains everyone inside our organization, we simply cannot host an event of this size and scale under these dangerous heat conditions,” Wawa Welcome America President and CEO Michael DelBene said in a statement.
In Washington, D.C. the U.S. Capitol Police issued a notice on Thursday that a rehearsal concert at the U.S. Capitol was closed to the public after consultations with the Office of Attending Physician, and officials shut down the Great American State Fair on the National Mall of Friday until 5 p.m.
Other communities in Pennsylvania are also canceling or rescheduling events. Lower Windsor Township rescheduled its America 250 event for July 8, and Norristown canceled a parade scheduled for Saturday, the Associated Press reported.
Middletown, Connecticut, has postponed its America 250 All-County Parade for Labor Day, the city government said on its Facebook page.
Despite the warm weather, President Donald Trump is expected to give a 45-minute speech on the National Mall on Saturday morning. The president said he would “make a really long speech” just to display that he can do anything, according to The Hill.
At night, Trump will attend a fireworks show at night.
Trump will be coming back to Washington, D.C., after coming back from Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where he gave a speech on the eve of America’s 250th birthday.
This represents Trump’s first visit to the national landmark since he was president in 2020.
