In response to the Trump administration firing prosecutors and FBI agents in the Biden administration who came after Donald Trump and others concerned about election fraud in 2020, Attorney General Kris Mayes posted on X that she would hire them. Mayes is prosecuting several of Trump’s allies over their work regarding the botched 2020 election, including Trump’s former attorneys Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman, with Donald Trump himself an unindicted co-conspirator. While other prosecutors across the country have backed off on targeting Trump and those around him since he won the 2024 presidential election, Mayes is doubling down on her antagonism.
“My message to all FBI agents and federal prosecutors who are being wrongfully fired by Trump: come see me about a job,” Mayes said. “We are hiring at the AZ Attorney General’s office and we actually support law enforcement.” She linked to a CBS news article about the terminations of the employees involved in the prosecutions of Trump and the J6 protesters. There were hundreds of comments after her post, almost all very critical of her.

State Senator Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek), founding chair of the Arizona Freedom Caucus and chair of the Senate Committee on Director Nominations, posted his disagreement on X. “Imagine being so moronically tone deaf … While America has just overwhelmingly re-elected @realDonaldTrump for the near sole purpose of draining the swamp … Lunatic Leftist AG Kristin Mayes is essentially begging the corrupt, fired DOJ staff to join her team … @KrisMayes is a clown,” he said.

Anticipating the firings, the Biden administration attempted to secure the ongoing employment of employees operating under the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C. who were hired temporarily to work on the J6 prosecution, by converting them into permanent employees immediately prior to the presidential administration transition.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove said in a memo regarding moving the employees to permanent status, “I will not tolerate subversive personnel actions.” Acting Attorney General James McHenry said in another memo that their employment has “hindered the ability” of the D.C. U.S. attorney to “faithfully implement the agenda that the American people elected President Trump to execute.”
On his first day in office, Trump pardoned or commuted the sentences of all J6 defendants. Last month, Trump signed an executive order to stop the “weaponization of the federal government.”
Founder Mike Davis of the Article III Project, which defends constitutionalist judges and the rule of law, posted on X in December that Mayes could go to prison due to obstructing the incoming president. He referenced Arizona’s botched elections in 2022, which allowed her to defeat Republican Abe Hamadeh by 280 points, and her statements opposing Trump’s illegal immigration crackdown. The DOJ issued a memo on January 21 directing federal prosecutors to investigate state and local jurisdictions it believes are impeding deportation plans outlined by the new Trump administration.
In December 2023, the Maricopa County Republican Committee passed a unanimous resolution calling to impeach Mayes over her lawfare and hostility to election integrity. In June 2024, a House committee looked at impeaching her. A year ago, Mohave County Supervisor Ron Gould sued Mayes over her threat to prosecute him if he hand counted ballots in the 2024 election. Mayes is prosecuting Cochise County Supervisor Tom Crosby for delaying canvassing of the 2022 election due to concerns about the voting machine tabulators. His fellow supervisor Peggy Judd pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case.
Mayes’ chief deputy, Dan Barr, is a colleague of left-wing election litigator Marc Elias. Her prosecution of Arizona’s 2020 alternate electors for Trump and their associates was based on a legal blueprint provided to her by the far left States United Democracy Center. Hamadeh and Arizona Corporation Commissioner Jim O’Connor believe Mayes never practiced law before becoming elected to the position, and lied about having been a prosecutor. State Senate President Warren Petersen (R-Mesa) is widely expected to challenge Mayes for reelection in 2026.
