Memphis Safe Task Force Catches Convicted Murderer ‘Erroneously Released’ in September 2025

The U.S. Marshals Service announced on Thursday that the Memphis Safe Task Force (MSTF) apprehended Anthony Green, who was convicted of first-degree murder in September 2025, but was nonetheless released by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

Green was first indicted in March 2021 for the murder of Octavious Atkins, who was struck multiple times after Green shot into his vehicle in June 2020. According to the Marshals, he was convicted on September 24, 2025, but “erroneously released” the same day. Action News 5 reported last year that the SCSO acknowledged Green was released due to a “miscommunication” and pledged to “reinforce training, improve oversight, and ensure strict compliance with all courtroom and bail-related procedures.”

The outlet reported that Green (pictured above) was released after the court revoked his $500,000 bond following the conviction. With the six-figure bond no longer an impediment to his release, Green was able to pay a $2,500 bond for another case, then be released from jail.

A total of 392 days passed between the “erroneous” release of Robinson and his Wednesday arrest by MSTF, which the Marshals said came after task force members received information claiming Green was at a relative’s apartment.

“MSTF deployed to the address, knocked and announced their presence, and had no answer at the door. MSTF then observed someone trying to jump out of the rear bedroom window,” according to the Marshals.

The federal law enforcement agency reported, “MSTF members breached the front door, and Green came out from the back room and surrendered. Green was taken into custody and transported to the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center without further incident.”

Three more MSTF arrests were announced by the Marshals on Thursday, including two men wanted for first-degree murder.

Walter Caffey, 19, was arrested after an October 9 arrest warrant charged him with the April 2024 murder of Donald Jennings at a Memphis gas station. The agency also announced the arrest of Daquarius Nash, 30, who also faces five counts of aggravated assault and a firearm charge, in addition to the first-degree murder allegation.

The Marshals also announced the arrest of Marcus Powell, 42, who is accused of attempted criminal homicide, attempted rape, and aggravated kidnapping with bodily injuries, after he allegedly strangled a woman during a domestic abuse altercation on Monday.

Since the task force deployed to Memphis in September 2025, the Marshals reported that MSTF members have made 13,795 arrests, including 147 for homicide.

At a recent roundtable celebrating the task force’s first-year achievements, Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated it would remain operational in Memphis indefinitely, calling the U.S. Department of Justice’s role in the task force an “investment” in the city.

A man serving a 162-year sentence for two murders was previously granted clemency “illegally” in 2022, as the Tennessee Court of Appeals determined a Shelby County Criminal Court judge and Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mullroy incorrectly worked to reduce the sentence to just 15 years.
