Live from Music Row Thursday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed successful attorney Gino Bulso in-studio to talk about why he’s running for the Tennessee House of Representatives in the 61st district.
Leahy: In-studio with us all-star panelists, my former boss at PJTV, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, senior editor at The Epoch Times, Mr. Roger Simon. Good morning, Roger.
Simon: Good morning, Michael.
Leahy: It’s great to have have you in this morning. And our special guest this morning is Mr. Gino Bulso. Gino is an attorney, a very successful attorney who is now running for the Tennessee House of Representatives in the 61st district, which is, in essence, mostly Williamson County. Welcome, Gino, to The Tennessee Star Report.
Bulso: Good morning, Michael.
Leahy: Well, the big question for you, Gino: you’re a very successful attorney. I hear that folks around the country fear facing Gino Bulso in court. That’s what I hear. Okay, so let’s be honest. You’re a very, very successful attorney.
Bulso: Well, you’re being very kind.
Leahy: Yeah, but it’s out there. (Chuckles) Now, my big question: you’re very successful making a lot of money as an attorney.
Why on earth would you want to change your life around dramatically to run for the Tennessee House of Representatives in the GOP nomination in the August 4th primary?
Bulso: Because, Michael, our country needs help. And I think all of us who love our country deeply and who have benefited from living here, working here, and raising a family are concerned about the overreach of our federal government that has just been increasing decade by decade since the 1960s.
To me, the remedy for the overreaching of the federal government lies not in sending good people to Washington, D.C. but rather in getting them in state legislatures across the country so that we can use the Tenth Amendment to rein in the out-of-control spending and federal deficit that is just simply growing exponentially, as we’re seeing day by day here in the Biden administration.
Leahy: You just said the magic words for me – Tenth Amendment. So it sounds like you’re a strong supporter of our national system of government in which the national federal government has certain defined powers, but the state governments and individuals also have certain defined powers.
Bulso: You’re 100 percent correct. And as most of your listeners know, the Tenth Amendment is the one that simply provides that any powers not delegated to the United States by this Constitution nor prohibited by it to the states are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.
That amendment was obviously critical to the passage of the Constitution. James Madison, in Federalist number 45, when writing about the Constitution, wrote, among other things, that the powers of the federal government that in the Constitution he just wrote are few and defined, and those of the state governments are numerous and indefinite.
Now, look at our country, Michael. Does that resemble anything like what we’re seeing today, where we’ve got a federal government that takes in $4 trillion a year in tax revenue but spends $6.2 trillion in tax revenue that’s driven up a debt of over $30 trillion, which is now 131 percent of our gross domestic product and which is now costing us $900 million a day in interest?
In an environment where the interest rates are on the rise, and therefore the percentage of the federal budget that’s going to be necessary to pay interest is only going to increase over the next five to 10 years.
We are at a critical point where states need to assert their rights under the Constitution. Because, remember, the state created the federal government and it did not give all of its powers to the federal government.
It’s time for the states using the Tenth Amendment to bring a case before the U.S. Supreme Court under its original jurisdiction. Article Three, Section Two of the Constitution, where we now have five constitutional conservatives.
And we had Justice Thomas and Sam Alito there before President Trump put on Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. But we’ve got the five rock-solid conservatives now who understand the principles under which this nation was founded.
And I think they’ll actually follow their constitutional duty to rein in the federal government and bring it back within the scope of its properly delegated powers under the Constitution.
Leahy: I can see why you’re such a successful attorney making the case. It sounds like you would agree with Georgetown University professor Randy Barnett, who’s written about this and said, at the founding, our country had islands of power in the sea of liberty and now has islands of liberty in a sea of power.
Bulso: I couldn’t put that any better. No, I agree with him 100 percent. That’s exactly the circumstance in which we’re finding ourselves.
Leahy: You’re singing a tune that I like.
Bulso: I’m happy to hear that. It’ll make for a much more smooth interview. (Laughter)
