Manny Sethi Is Optimistic the United States Can Defeat the Coronavirus

U.S. Republican senatorial candidate Manny Sethi believes the United States can avoid Italy’s fate and not allow the coronavirus to overwhelm our country’s resources.

These were among only a few of the things Sethi said at a Facebook tele-town hall Thursday to discuss the worldwide pandemic that has distressed markets and hospitalized many people.

Sethi, who wants to replace the retiring U.S. Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander, submitted to a question and answer session with voters, some of whom asked about current conditions in Italy versus what might happen in the United States.

“In Italy the curve was a high peak and then a slow turn. The problem with that was it (the coronavirus) overwhelmed the hospital resources, so, if you have so many patients really fast, what happens is it overwhelms the hospitals,” Sethi said.

“What we are trying to do with social distancing and all the other things is we are doing is to stretch that curve out.”

Sethi also said he hopes the United States’ curve will flatten out over the coming weeks and months.

“Italy didn’t contain this, so it peaked really fast. There were too many patients, and it overwhelmed the number of hospital beds. We need to slow the curve so the number of sick patients who need hospitalization does out outmatch our resources,” Sethi said.

“But I believes we can beat this.”

Among the other things the doctor turned Senate candidate said during Thursday’s tele-town hall:

• U.S. Republican President Donald Trump is doing a great job handling the emergency. Sethi, if voters send him to Washington, D.C., promised to support Trump.

• People who have weddings scheduled for June should not cancel those plans, at least not yet, because the United States’ efforts to wipe out the coronavirus might make it less of a threat by then.

• The United States must rely less on China for pharmaceutical drugs, hospital gowns, surgical caps, and medical supplies. Sethi went on to say this is “a national security issue.”

• Any federal stimulus plan to boost the national economy during and after this emergency must “help Main Street and not Wall Street.”

As The Star reported last month, Sethi released a plan to address the coronavirus. At the time, Sethi called the outbreak a “massive international crisis” that needs “something as bold and ambitious as a Manhattan Project-style effort to combat it.” Sethi also said Americans “must stop listening to the Wall Street elites, who are more worried about not spooking the markets and their pocketbooks than they are about protecting Americans.”

Scale them down. Think about an outdoor wedding where people can spread out for a little “social distancing”. It worked nicely for my wife and me back in 1979…less expensive, more casual and relaxed.
