U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07) commemorated the anniversary of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) bombing in Argentina and took issue with the Biden administration’s negotiations on the Iran Nuclear Deal on Monday.
“We will never forget the 28th anniversary of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) bombing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This heinous attack—carried out by Hezbollah with the support of Iran—took 85 victims and wounded hundreds more,” said Green in a tweet.
“Today, we remember the victims, those impacted, and their loving families as we stand united with Argentina’s Jewish community,” continued the 7th district representative.
“It’s unacceptable that President Biden is continuing to negotiate the Iran Nuclear Deal in spite of Iran’s continued acts of terror against U.S. servicemembers, our allies, and after Tehran’s meeting with Vladimir Putin this week,” Green concluded.
The AMIA bombing occurred on July 18, 1994, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and targeted the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association, a Jewish community center.
The attack was executed via suicide bombing as a bomb-laden van was driven into the AMIA building and subsequently detonated. Eighty-five people were killed and over 300 were injured in the attack.
The AMIA suicide bombing remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentine history.
The bombing came two years after the March 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, which killed 29 and wounded 242. That act of terror was Argentina’s deadliest attack until the AMIA bombing. The Islamic Jihad Organization, which operates under the umbrella of Hezbollah and is linked to Iran, took credit for that bombing.
The Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday that a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei told Al Jazeera’s Arabic service on Sunday that “Tehran is technically capable of making a nuclear bomb but has yet to decide whether to build it.”
“Tehran will also directly respond against Israel should its security be targeted,” The Post said.
“In a few days we were able to enrich uranium up to 60 percent and we can easily produce 90 percent enriched uranium … Iran has the technical means to produce a nuclear bomb but there has been no decision by Iran to build one,” Kamal Kharrazi said.
The original Iran Nuclear Deal was entered into by the Obama administration with the stated purpose of preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
According to White House archives, “On January 16, 2016, the International Atomic Energy Agency verified that Iran has completed the necessary steps under the Iran deal that will ensure Iran’s nuclear program is and remains exclusively peaceful.”
The Trump administration withdrew from the deal with President Trump saying at the time, “The Iran Deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.”
“President Donald J. Trump is terminating the United States’ participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran and re-imposing sanctions lifted under the deal,” said the White House in a statement in May of 2018.
