The Athens Soap Box Derby will also take place at MooFest from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Washington Avenue in downtown. Each participant in the derby uses Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to prepare their car to race. In 1995, the Athens Parks & Recreation Department held the first local Soap Box Derby race, and since that time, Athens has sent 24 champions in the Stock, 21 champions in the Super Stock, and 10 champions in the Super Kids divisions to the world championships in Akron, Ohio. Each year, over 30 drivers in the local race compete to be the champion that gets to make their mark on Akron.
After MooFest wraps up at 5 p.m., the tenth annual Sounds of Summer music festival will begin at 7 p.m. at Market Park Pavilion in downtown Athens. This weekend, the festival will host Tim Decker & the Tennessee River as well as Emisunshine. Families are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the evening of entertainment. The summer concert series is presented by Friendly City Festivals and Athens Area Council for the Arts.
After Saturday, the Sounds of Summer music festival will host four more concerts on July 2nd (ft. Sweet Georgia Sound), August 6th (ft. Tim Hughes Quartet and Will Boyd & Kelle Jolly), September 3rd (ft. Kinslee Melhorn and September Song), and October 8th (ft. The Dexter Thomas Band).
