President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he was banning CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House, citing what he called “fake news.”
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW […], and Politico […] from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” he posted on Truth Social.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” he added.
Trump has long feuded with those networks, most notably CNN, over their coverage of his political career.
At present, however, there is no White House press secretary and the usual press briefings are somewhat disrupted. The most likely immediate outcome is that the administration attempts to remove those networks from the presidential and vice presidential pool rotations.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on social media that America’s economy “is a disaster and your reckless war of choice in Iran is a failure.
“That’s not fake news. It’s stone-cold reality,” he said.
Colorado Democrat Rep. Jason Crowe said Trump is “trampling on our Constitution and the freedom of the press.”
“His corruption is staggering–and his attempts to cover it up won’t work,” he noted.
Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker said Trump’s actions were “another attack on the First Amendment from a president who knows he and his party of bootlickers are deeply unpopular.”
“Donald Trump can’t hide from his failing record, so he’s banning journalists he doesn’t like to keep you from hearing about it,” Pritzker noted.
