FBI Director Kash Patel on Tuesday confirmed that the Trump administration was working to create legislation to target “birth tourism,” the practice of traveling to the U.S. to give birth and secure citizenship for newborns.
Patel made the remarks during an appearance before Senate lawmakers of the Judiciary Committee.
“We are following the federal statutes that we have on the books right now, and we’re working with our partners in Congress to draft new legislation to give us new authorities to make sure that we can combat the threat,” he said, according to Politico.
The effort follows the Supreme Court rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship, finding that the children of illegal aliens hold birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.
After the Court issued this ruling, the president said the ruling was “too bad” for America.
“We can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, that has now been determined during this process. No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!” he noted.
To crack down on birth tourism, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order requiring state agencies to investigate and remove birth tourism schemes in the state.
Texas Attorney General and Senate candidate Ken Paxton announced his office was investigating two hospitals along the southern border after billboards in Spanish advertised childbirth services.
