House Majority Leader Steve Scalise warned Republican voters Wednesday night in Dallas that Democrats would impeach President Donald Trump if they win back control of Congress later this year.
Scalise’s speech was part of the first ever Republican midterm convention, which is taking place in Texas. The two-day event will feature speeches from multiple GOP leaders and President Donald Trump is expected to speak both nights.
The Republican urged voters to vote this year in order to protect the president and his America First agenda.
“The first thing they’ll do is impeach President Trump and his cabinet,” Scalise said. “This is not your father’s Democrat Party. The Democrat Party has been completely taken over by crazy communists.”
Scalise also warned that Democrats would repeal a lot of the Trump administration’s and the GOP’s agenda if they win back control in November, including its “no tax on tips” policy.
“They will repeal no tax on overtime, no tax on tips,” Scalise said. “They’ve said they’ll raise taxes on every hardworking American … This is what we talk about when we say it’s commonsense versus crazy communist.”
So far during the Trump administration’s second term, Democrats have introduced six articles of impeachment against the president. Four have come from Texas U.S. Rep. Al Green, who has attempted to get Trump impeached for allegedly turning America into an authoritarian government, bypassing Congress’ authority to declare war in regard to the Iran conflict, abuse of power allegations and alleged high crimes and misdemeanors.
Rep. John Larson from Connecticut and Michigan U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar also attempted to impeach Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors.
All three Democrats lost in their primary races this year, meaning they will not serve in Congress after the session ends in January 2027.
The speech comes as both parties gear up for the midterms in November, where voter turnout is historically low.
The midterm general election will take place on Nov. 3.
