British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer Resigns as Labour Support Collapses

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will resign as leader of the Labour Party after losing the confidence of his parliamentary colleagues, but said he will remain in office for months while the party selects a successor.

The announcement marks the end of a turbulent period for Starmer, whose government has faced mounting political pressure and poor electoral results. Rather than stepping aside immediately, Starmer said he would stay on as caretaker prime minister until a leadership contest concludes after Parliament returns from its summer recess.

The process will not begin until July 9 and is expected to conclude in September.

Starmer delivered his resignation statement outside 10 Downing Street as protesters gathered nearby. During his remarks, he highlighted what he viewed as the accomplishments of his leadership and defended his record in office.

Six years ago, he said, he inherited a Labour Party that was “politically, financially, and morally bankrupt.”

“I was told time and time again that my party was finished, that we were consigned to history,” Starmer said.

The outgoing prime minister argued that he had restored Labour’s political fortunes but acknowledged that his party no longer wanted him to lead it into the next general election.

“I have heard the answer of my Parliamentary party to that question and I accept that answer with good grace,” Starmer said. “Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.”

Starmer ruled out participating in the coming leadership contest and pledged to support whoever succeeds him.

“I will remain in place as Prime Minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he said. “I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support, knowing they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago.”

The resignation follows months of speculation over when the prime minister would step down. Questions about his political future intensified after Labour suffered historically poor results in local elections earlier this year.

Attention has now shifted to the race to replace him.

Former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is widely viewed as a leading contender after recently returning to Parliament. According to reports, Burnham’s successful return to Westminster and discussions among Labour lawmakers over the weekend helped convince Starmer that he no longer had sufficient support to remain in office.

The leadership contest is expected to dominate British politics throughout the summer.

While there is no constitutional requirement for a new prime minister to call a general election, the next Labour leader would assume office without having led the party in the election that produced the current parliamentary majority.  Burnham has said he intends to govern based on Labour’s 2024 election platform.

Last week, a report came out examining grooming gangs in England, noting that in many convicted cases, most offenders were Pakistani men who sexually exploited young British girls.

“The demographic and cultural drivers are clear. Perpetrators from Pakistani Muslim and other Muslim backgrounds operated under an honour- and shame-based clan code that treated non-Muslim girls, especially white working class girls, as property available for sexual use. This pattern was reinforced by eight theological and legal aspects of Islam. These include the doctrine of Muslim superiority drawn from Quranic verses that position Muslims at the top with a duty to correct non-believers,” the report said.
