President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he would increase tariffs on an array of Canadian products to 50%, following the collapse of trade talks.
Trump’s announcement marks an expansion of the tariffs the administration imposed on Friday after Washington and Ottawa failed to clinch a final trade deal.
“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” he posted on Truth Social. “Their ridiculously high tariffs on our Farmers and farm products has made life impossible for these great American Patriots, and has long created a 60 Billion Dollar Deficit between our two Countries. Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE!”
“On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%,” he added. “Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer! On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US! They do 95% of their business with the U.S., with us, the exact opposite!”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told Canadian reporters that he was not surprised by Trump’s threats, according to the Canadian Broadcast Channel.
“The president is doing what we had … not suspected but [what] we had confirmed through the terms that they were offering,” Carney said. “And we would not accept that.”
Earlier on Friday, Trump announced a pause on tariffs set to take effect, noting that the U.S. and Canada were on the cusp of an agreement that ultimately did not materialize.
The Angus Reid Institute, a Canadian nonprofit research institute, released a poll showing over three-fourths of Canadians supported its government breaking off trade negotiations with America.
Nearly two-thirds of Canadians think the country will be stronger in the long run as a result of Carney’s actions.
