Is Your Guru Killing You?

Tennessee Star

…For the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. ~ 2 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV) I suppose it’s ironic that I – a Certified Personal Trainer and owner of a fitness and health company – someone who makes his living by providing instruction, am writing an article warning of the dangers of giving or receiving too much information. And yet, it’s an article that needs to be written. We are beings who ultimately function best through our own internal guidance system. Yet we sometimes need the assistance of other people, to help guide us back to our natural path, and to help move us through life’s complicated maze. The problem occurs when their guidance fails to move us back to our path, but instead guides us onto their path. This is a huge problem in our world, and is spread across nearly every field of human endeavor. It is common in the world of religion and spiritual pursuit. It is also huge in the world of medicine, health and fitness. Authorities and gurus abound, each with their own take on reality, and what it takes to “succeed.” When someone asks me to help them transform their health and fitness, they typically either…

In Defense of Mirrors

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, Who in this land is fairest of all? ~ Brothers Grimm   Mirrors have gotten a bad rap. I’m going to do my best in this article to restore them to their rightful place of honor. Confession: I’m a low-tech guy. I’ve always inherently trusted low tech, and distrusted high tech. Perhaps this is a reflection of my background – my parents were middle class, blue-collar people who were heavily influenced by the Great Depression. They learned to trust real, tangible things, and so have I. Don’t get me wrong – high tech has brought us so many amazing breakthroughs. I’m well aware, and grateful, for instance, that this column itself would not be possible without the magic of the Internet. But still… In the fitness world, so much these days seems to be about the hottest trends. And right now, wearable technology is IT. Gotta have a FitBit, or an Apple Watch, or a Garmin, or a Huwai. You’ve gotta track your steps, your heart rate, your “perceived” exertion, your calories, and your macros (protein, carbs, and fats). Hey – again, I ain’t hatin’!’ I like and recommend MyFitnessPal and other nutrition trackers to my…

There’s a Fine Line Between Athlete and Invalid

Tennessee Star

I’ve never seen so many injured people. It seems almost everyone I run into these days is consistently and continuously injured, especially those who are a bit older, and I don’t mean very old – thirty and above. I’m not even including the multitude of those too sick to train, who are obese, have sky-high blood pressure, diabetes, compromised hearts, etc. That’s the subject of another article. I’m just speaking today of those who are chronically injured. Who want to be an athlete but instead are essentially an invalid. We abuse our spirits, minds and bodies in so many ways. The body will take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’ – but only for so long. The injury cycle is one that is familiar to so many – attempt to work out, get injured, sit out for a week, a month, or longer, make a “comeback,” and get hurt again, starting the cycle all over again. Can you relate? So what’s going on here? To generalize, the cycle often looks like this: 1.     Disuse of the body, causing… 2.     …Weak, unbalanced muscles and connective tissue. Coupled with… 3.     …Poor diet. Often combined with… 4.     …Spiritual and emotional issues. And…

Were You Meant to Be Immortal?

For God did not make Death. He takes no pleasure in destroying the living. —The Book of Wisdom 1:13 I have a good friend who often tells people he is going to live forever. I think he believes it. Stranger, I think I believe it. Not just that he could possibly live forever, but that any human being can potentially live forever, or at the least, significantly longer than the average person is living today. According to the Bible, God created Adam and Eve without sin and therefore with the ability to live forever. God gave them all they needed for eternal life in the Garden; but He warned them not to eat fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil or they would die, as would all their descendants. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. –Genesis 2:17 KJV The serpent convinced Eve that not only would they not die if they ate the fruit, but to the contrary… …your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil….…

Former NFL QB-Turned-Activist Kaepernick in Ghana on July 4th: ‘To Find My Independence I Went Home.’

Former San Francisco 49ers back-up quarterback Colin Kaepernick seems to have some extra time on his hands these days, so he took a trip to his ancestral home of Ghana to ‘celebrate’ Independence Day. Our good friends at The Gateway Pundit report: Colin Kaepernick traveled to Ghana to trash the United States on the 4th of July. The former NFL quarterback, who no one wants to pick up this year for some reason, tweeted out his disgust for America on Independence Day. Kaepernick released this video Tuesday, July 4. As of our reporting, the post has over 30,000 retweets and 63,000 likes. How can we truly celebrate independence on a day that intentionally robbed our ancestors of theirs? To find my independence I went home. pic.twitter.com/hniYGJeLxG — Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) July 4, 2017 The middling quarterback made news last year when he refused to stand for the National Anthem, praised Marxist Fidel Castro, attacked police officers, and generally trashed America.

It’s Time to Take Care of Our Own Health

Tennessee Star

Health care “reform” is once again in the news. And while I am happy to see any increase in our choices as citizens and consumers, the conversation is still about other people – politicians – deciding the future of our health care. This is the wrong emphasis. Most Americans want to see those who have special situations get the care they need. And I think that most want as much personal freedom as possible, allowing them to make their own health care choices. Accomplishing both these goals should not be a difficult chore. Meanwhile, I’ve been thinking about what I’d personally like to see more of in health care plans: An increased emphasis on help to get or remain healthy. For instance, gym membership and fitness class discounts (such as done by the SilverSneakers program for senior citizens), and affordable access to blood work, nutritionists, personal trainers and other specialists. Trainers can guide clients through targeted 12-week sessions covering weight and fat loss, lean muscle mass retention and gain, strength and mobility training, etc. Plans such as these will be more popular as the public demands them. I also want to see more freedom to choose in the marketplace, just as…

6 Reasons Why Less Is More for the Mature Fitness Athlete

As the owner of a fitness training and consulting company, and as a mature fitness athlete who has experienced numerous injuries (as well as surgeries), I’m painfully aware—pun intended—of many of the challenges faced by the seasoned fitness athlete. I’m also aware of how these challenges can bring out the best in us. How they can cause us to train smarter, learning valuable lessons about health, fitness, and life that we would likely have missed without these experiences. I’d like to explore with you some of the key changes that often occur in the older fitness athlete, that can bring on new insights and even superior techniques and practices: 1.    Priorities The older fitness athlete has more responsibilities than the younger athlete. Having to pay the bills every month and often take care of a family has a way of focusing the mind! The older fitness athlete no longer has the motivation to spend hours at the gym pumping up. 2.    Desire for more essential things in life As a person matures, we begin to see what’s important to us. Meaning increasingly matters. More time for contemplation matters. The simple enjoyment of life is important. Being a slave to a gym loses…

A Nashville Weekend That Will Live in Legend

Tennessee Star

This weekend in Nashville, something happened that has never happened before. CMAFest, Bonnaroo and the Stanley Cup Final all occurred at the same time.  The first two were planned, but the final came as a little bit of a surprise. CMAFest started in 1972 at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium and with 5000 fans attending 20 hours of country music.  Today, the CMA Music Festival encompasses four days of country music on 11 stages with over 150 acts performing with 100,000+ fans attending. Beginning musicians just starting out to the most famous who are selected to sing at Nissan Stadium are proud to be a part of this historic festival each year. Country favorites such as Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett, Florida-Georgia Line, Keith Urban and Brad Paisley were just few of the superstars to thrill fans nightly at the Nissan Stadium main event. Sixty-three miles southeast off I-24, the legendary rock event, Bonnaroo, was occurring at the exact same time as CMAFest.  Bonnaroo is also a four-day musical and arts event on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. Bonnaroo started in 2002 to immolate the feel of the 1960s and 1970s rock concerts like the original Woodstock.…

‘We Wuz Robbed, Bless Your Heart’

Tennessee Star

Commentary by Steve Gill   Nashville has a lot to be proud of in the wake of the historic Stanley Cup Final run by the Predators: The class and skill of a team on the rise that promises to be back stronger and better next year. City officials who handled incredible crowds with efficiency and flexibility, especially when combined with the crowd control nightmare of CMA Fest colliding with a Stanley Cup Final all in a several block radius. Fans who fully embraced a sport that many were still learning and players they had never heard of when the playoff run began. Nashville’s reputation as an “it” town was already firmly in place before, but it is more “it” than ever in the view of hockey and sports media types who had never given Nashville more than a passing glance in the past. Terms like “Smashville” and “Prednecks,” and the visuals of catfish on ice, are now a part of NHL lore. But what Nashville can perhaps most be proud of is cementing our reputation as a place where Southern Hospitality is still a “thing.” Yes, there was some booing of the winning Penguins as they hoisted the Stanley Cup.…

Penguins Take Stanley Cup From Nashville Predators With Controversial 2 to 0 Win in Game 6

The Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year with a controversial 2 to 0 win in Game 6 to take the series 4 games to 2 at Bridgestone Arena Sunday night. The first official score in the game came with just minutes remaining in the third period when Patric Hornqvist beat the Predators’ Pekka Rinne with the game winner. The Penguins iced the game with an empty netter before the final seconds ticked off the clock. The game was scoreless after two periods, but only because a controversial officiating call early in the first period went against the Predators, as ESPN reported: In the opening minute of a deadlocked Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final Sunday night, the Nashville Predators appeared to open the scoring. But a quick whistle from referee Kevin Pollock blew the play dead, depriving Nashville of a prime scoring opportunity on a play that could not be challenged or overturned by video replay. The sequence began when Predators forward Filip Forsberg sped down the left wing and fired a shot at Penguins goaltender Matt Murray 1:06 into the second period. After Murray made the initial save, the puck trickled behind…

Predators Fall to Penguins in Game 5 of Stanley Cup Final, 6 to 0

The night began with high expectations for the Nashville Predators in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the PPG Paints Arena, but hopes of taking a one game lead in a series tied at two games apiece vanished quickly as the Penguins jumped to a 3 to 0 lead in the first period. Fans back in Nashville packed Bridgestone Arena for a watch party, but there was little to cheer about after the opening face off. Things got worse for the Predators in the second period when the Penguins added another 3 goals. Down 6 to 0 at the start of the third period, the Predators remained unable to get their offense going, and when the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Predators had been shut out. The Penguins now lead the series 3 games to 2, and can clinch their second consecutive Stanley Cup with a victory in Game 6. The Predators will have to win both Game 6 and Game 7 to claim the NHL championship trophy.

Wayne Gretzky Visits Ford Ice Center in Antioch

Wayne Gretzky visited the Ford Ice Center in Antioch on Tuesday to see the inaugural Gretzky Hockey School in action. More than 90 kids are participating in the summer training camp, run by Gretzky’s son, Ty. The National Hockey League Hall of Famer, known as “The Great One,” signed autographs and had his photo taken with fans, reports WKRN News 2. “We would like to give a big thank you to Wayne Gretzky for stopping by to meet the boys and girls attending the Gretzky Hockey School! It was an experience of a lifetime,” the Ford Ice Center posted on Facebook. The Canadian-born star, now 56, retired in 1999 after twenty seasons playing on four teams in the NHL. Ty Gretzky told WKRN he’s impressed with the enthusiasm of the kids in the program, which he attributed in part to the hype surrounding the Nashville Predators vying for the Stanley Cup. “It is very special for them to be able to feel this right now as it is going on,” he said. Ty is one of Wayne Gretzky’s five children with his wife Janet. “Gretzky’s proudest role is as a father and a husband,” his website says.

Nashville Predators Beat Penguins 4 to 1 to Tie Stanley Cup Final Two Games Apiece

The Nashville Predators stomped the Pittsburgh Penguins 4 to 1 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final to tie the NHL championship series at two games each. The momentum of the championship clearly swung towards the Predators on Monday, who scored first first midway through the first period to jump to a 1 to nothing lead over the Penguins. Perennial Penguins All-Star Sidney Crosby answered barely a minute later to tie the game up at 1 each, but Nashville stormed back in the second and third period with three unanswered goals to claim the 4 to 1 victory. Nashville Goalie Pekka Rinne was stellar between the pipes, completely shutting the Penguins down after the lone goal by Cosby. The best of seven series continues until later this week.

Why You’re Not Reaching Your Health and Fitness Goals

Tennessee Star

Health and fitness are one area of life. No doubt they’re an incredibly important area, but they are still just one area. With few exceptions, your level of health and fitness is under your own control. The laws of God and nature control health and fitness, just as these laws control all aspects of our lives. Therefore the same character that we exercise in all other areas of our lives affects this area in the same manner. So to consider why you may not be reaching your health and fitness goals, so too consider why you may not be meeting goals (aims), in other areas of your life. Think about particular paths you’ve taken, or rather started to take, but then quit for one reason or another. Think about your career path, for instance. Have you invested time and energy learning a vocation, only to give up on it, thereby wasting time and money? How many false starts have you had? Now apply this to health and fitness. Let’s look at diet. How many times have you started a new eating program, only to quit once the going got rough? Often it’s because you gave in to the siren’s…

Nashville Predators Crush Penguins 5 to 1 to Win Game 3 of Stanley Cup Final

The Nashville Predators crushed the Pittsburgh Penguins 5 to 1 on Saturday night to win the first Stanley Cup Final game ever played in the Music City. The victory was the first in the Stanley Cup Final for the Predators, who dropped the first two games against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne, who had played below his usual All-Star performance in the second game of the series, bounced back with a stellar performance to hold the defending Stanley Cup champions to a single goal. The hometown crowd who saw the Predators win at Bridgestone Arena were wild with enthusiasm before, during, and after the game. The Penguins jumped out to an early 1 – 0 lead in the first period, but the Predators bounced back ferociously in the second with three goals. They sealed the deal in the third with two more goals. Five different Predators scored.

Nashville Predators Lose Game 1 of Stanley Cup Final to Penguins, 5 to 3

The Nashville Predators dropped Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5 to 3 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Monday. The Penguins jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period, as WKRN reported:   After dual penalties by Calle Jarnkrok and James Neal, the Penguins were able to capitalize as Evgeni Malkin scored his eighth goal of the postseason to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. About a minute later, the Penguins scored again as Chris Kunitz found Conor Sheary for an easy finish and a 2-0 lead. Just before the end of the first period, the Preds got some bad luck as Nick Bonino’s shot was deflected by Pekka Rinne and off Mattias Ekholm for a 3-0 Penguins lead. The Predators fought back to tie the game 3-3 by the third period, but the Penguins went up 4-3 with about 3 minutes and 17 seconds left in regulation to go ahead for good, and scored again in the final minute after Nashville pulled goaltender Pekka Rinne. The Predators press office summed up the game with this tweet: #Preds force the comeback and dominate majority of the play but fall 5-3 in Game One.…

Tim Tebow Slams 3rd Home Run of the Season

Tim Tebow broke out of a 1 for 18 slump on Sunday, hitting his third home run and a double in a game the Class A Columbia Fireflies he plays for lost 6 to 3 to the West Virginia Power. Tebow improved his batting average to .230, significantly better than critics of the 29-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback expected from him in his first season of professional baseball. You can read the box score of the game here. While Tebow still has a long way to go to make it from Class A to the major leagues, the New York Mets, who signed him earlier this year, are said to be considering a move up to their Class A Advanced club in St. Lucie, Florida some time after the Class A South Atlantic League’s All-Star break. Attendance at Columbia Fireflies home games has been up 30 percent compared to last year with Tebow on the roster.
