Report: New York Mets Considering Promotion of Tim Tebow to AA Minor League Baseball from Class A Columbia Fireflies

When the New York Mets signed former Florida Gators star quarterback Tim Tebow, the team was widely mocked as wasting money on an expensive publicity stunt. There was no way, the narrative went, a failed NFL player approaching his 30th birthday should take up a roster spot that could go to a real prospect. RELATED: Tim…

But according to Food & Wine magazine, we’ll have to drive to Memphis to get the tastiest burger in the U.S. Hog & Hominy in Memphis topped the magazine’s recent list of restaurants with the best burgers in the country. Its signature burger is the John T. Burger. The magazine notes, “Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman (F&W Best New Chefs 2013) pay tribute to food writer and Southern Foodways Alliance Director John T. Sugar: Are You ‘Experienced’? Or Just Plain Addicted?

Tennessee Star

Are you “experienced”? Have you ever been “experienced”? Well, I have… ~ Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced? According to the legendary rock star himself, the above song was not necessarily written about drugs, but about being at peace with yourself. That’s cool. But the song – with its revolutionary psychedelic effects—sounded like a drug testimony to me! Yet arguably, the most powerful “drug” of all to “experience” isn’t revolutionary at all—it’s the food we eat every day. Food is certainly the biggest challenge to the majority of my personal training clients, and from what I can see, much of mankind. The role of food has gone so far beyond its biological function (i.e.: nourishing the body) – particularly in modern times – that I don’t see how it will return to it’s original role. I remember growing up, my mom baked dessert items on a near-daily basis. She had taken a cake-decorating class at a local adult school, and really went to town with it! We always had something sweet and delectable inside the Tupperware container on top of the fridge, and when it came time to celebrate our birthdays… forget about it! And on the back patio, we had a second refrigerator…

Can I Help You? It Depends…

Tennessee Star

The one question every Certified Personal Trainer should know the answer to in regards to a client is, “Can I help you?” I know for my company, Greek Physique™, LLC, the answer, quite frankly is, “It depends.” If you want to be a steroid-juiced, vein-popping bodybuilder, the answer is “No; we can’t help you.” If you want to be able to lift a car off the ground without a jack, the answer is “No.” If you want to reduce your bodyfat to a mere handful of percentage points, the answer is “No.” If you want to train for an ultra-marathon race, the answer is “No.” If you want to attain the flexibility of a contortionist, the answer is “No.” Now if you want someone to train you for the above goals, you can certainly find many who can and will provide that service. It’s just not what we do. It’s important for every person, and for every business, to know what they do—and what they DON’T do. So… “Can I help you?” If you want to gain lean muscle mass or attain a more toned and proportional physique, the answer is “Yes.” If you want to increase strength, the answer…

Fitness: The Only Failure Is Not Being In the Game

Tennessee Star

Anyone who has ever attempted to improve a condition has experienced failure – sometimes considerable failure. And there are many seekers of health and fitness whose bodies are strewn across the road of failure. They set out with high expectations of having a well-toned physique, losing those unwanted pounds, or becoming fit enough to at least finish a 5K race. But failures – multiple failures – beat them down, convincing them that they’ll never succeed, so why try? Failures can come in many forms, such as being on a nutrition and fitness plan that does not seem to work at first, or seeing your weight actually go up instead of down while dieting, or feeling that you can’t get stronger – or build the physique you desire – no matter what you do. These kinds of things have happened to anyone who has spent any time in the fitness game. These people who have been convinced they’ll never succeed are the casualties of the fitness game – the quitters. Everybody knows instinctively that there’s something wrong with quitting. That giving in to our doubts and fears is a sure way to failure, which is linked to a number of bad outcomes, from the numerous health…

The Best Diet Book Doesn’t Exist

In my debut piece last week, I Made It Back to Good Health, I discussed the long, hard, but ultimately satisfying road I traveled to become more fit today, in my mid-50’s, than I was twenty years ago, and along the way became a knowledgeable fitness professional. The article primarily dealt with my uphill journey overcoming injuries and surgeries. In today’s column, I want to talk about about the nutrition side. Many experts have said it is at least 75% of the game, when it comes to losing weight and body fat. I concur. I have spent thousands of hours studying and implementing many “diets” over the years, putting in a ton of reading, including the most cutting edge information in the fitness industry, in the quest for more mental and physical energy, a clean and efficient body, more muscle, and less fat. Let me save you a lot of time and trouble: the best diet book, written, or video program does not exist. “What? Come on!” you say. “There are some great diet books and programs out there – amazing breakthroughs!” Yes, that’s true. Science has come a long way. And there are some great diets out there. But…

The Legendary Don Rickles Has Died

Tennessee Star

Renowned comedy icon Don Rickles had died. He would have been 91 in May. Rickles burst into the mainstream with his acerbic style after Frank Sinatra spotted him in a night club in the late 1950s. A pioneer in the genre of ‘insult comedy,’ Sinatra said in later interviews he was impressed with how fearlessly Rickles would take on hecklers. His take-no-prisoners style soon earned him such nicknames as, “The King of Zing,” “Mr. Warmth,” and “The Merchant of Venom.” Although not really know as a big screen star, he has appeared in many box office hits, including the 1960 dramatic comedy, “The Rat Race;” campy Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello romp, “Beach Blanket Bingo;” and Scorsese’s high-stakes drama, “Casino.” But perhaps his most famous role to the current generation is as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the groundbreaking “Toy Story” series. Amid the bustle of a busy news day, the internet took a moment to mourn his passing: https://twitter.com/50sAnd60s/status/850080053773963264   Over a Bloody Mary in Beverly Hills, insult comic Don Rickles tells the best Sinatra story ever https://t.co/uvtWgghXdS #VFArchives pic.twitter.com/PucWBGkQKd — VANITY FAIR (@VanityFair) April 6, 2017   Comedian Don Rickles dies at 90 https://t.co/KsAzcjFcTf The only man to pick on…

I Made it Back to Good Health … So Can You

Hello, and welcome to the debut of my column with the Tennessee Star! My name is Patrick Rooney. I’m the Founder and President of GREEK PHYSIQUE™, LLC, and a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Association of Fitness Certification (NAFC). Through the grace of God, dedication, and knowledge, I’ve recovered from poor health, surgery and injury. And now, well into my fifth decade, I’m in better physical condition today than I was twenty years ago – I can help you do the same. I grew up taking a particular liking to sports, especially basketball, and an anything-goes playground game of keep-away played on asphalt. Any kind of quick-turning activity on concrete is brutal on the ankles and I turned, sprained, and otherwise mangled them countless times. I mostly provided my own physical therapy and got back in the game. Looking back, this was my introduction to physical therapy and personal training. I learned to condition my body to excel at sports, and became fascinated in particular with increasing my vertical leap. At my peak, I could slam dunk a volleyball – not bad for a barely 5’ 10” Italian / Irish (i.e.: white) guy. I trained my legs running ten flights of…

Hot Food, Fast: The Home Microwave Oven Turns 50

Tennessee Star

By: Timothy J. Jorgensen, Director of the Health Physics and Radiation Protection Graduate Program and Associate Professor of Radiation Medicine, Georgetown University The year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the home microwave oven. The ovens were first sold for home use by Amana corporation in 1967, but they had actually been used for commercial food preparation since the 1950s. It wasn’t until 1967, however, that technology miniaturization and cost reductions in manufacturing made the ovens small enough and cheap enough (a still steep US$495; US$3,575 in 2017 dollars) for use in the kitchens of the American middle class. Now, it would be hard to find a U.S. home without a microwave. Amana, a subsidiary of Raytheon corporation, actually called their first model the “Radarange” – a contraction of radar and range (as in stove). What do microwave ovens have to do with radar? Radar is an acronym for “radio detection and ranging.” Developed prior to World War II, the technology is based on the principle that radio waves can bounce off the surfaces of large objects. So if you point a radio wave beam in a certain direction, some of the radio waves will come bouncing back to you, if…

6 True-Life Facts About St Patrick to Impress Your Friends (and Deepen Your Faith)

Tennessee Star

Saint Patrick’s Day is here, and so it goes we join millions across the globe to don our best green garb and imbibe in a panoply beverages from the unnaturally verdant Shamrock Shake to the local pub’s green draft – all in a joyous tradition to cheer one another in the name of a spiritual hero of Ireland. But did you know the true-life story of the man who would become St. Patrick is as harrowing as any high adventure you might find in the pages of a Batman comic? Here are 6 facts you might not have known about the life and times of St. Patrick: (1) St. Patrick was not Irish. St. Patrick’s only known name prior to his canonization is “Patricius.” He was a born late in the fourth century in Roman Britain – most likely the modern Wales region, although some scholars say it was Scotland. Like many Romans of that era, his family were devout Christians. His father, Calpurnius was a deacon, and his grandfather Potitus, was a priest. (2) St. Patrick did not share his family’s faith, and was a skeptic. In his book, Confessio, St. Patrick writes that as a boy, he was…

DeShaun Watson comments on rumors that he’s trying to avoid the Browns

Brad Rowland, FanBuzz Writer Posted with permission from FanBuzz The Cleveland Browns hold the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson figures to be in the mix at that spot. However, Watson reportedly did the opposite of what the Browns asked him to do in spurning the Senior Bowl and that only added to the perception that the title-winning QB does not want to play in Cleveland. With that in mind, Watson was prompted about the topic during an interview with the NFL Network on Thursday and Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk brings word of the specifics: “That’s wrong, false information. I talked to [Browns coach] Hue Jackson, we had a great conversation right after the national championship game and I told him, ‘Hey, this is what I’m thinking about’ and he understood everything. I talked with my family, my agent, my trainer, all the coaches at Clemson, and it was just best for me to go ahead and get started in the draft process. I moved to California, so it was just a lot moving from Georgia to California [to train ahead of the Scouting Combine] and then trying to…
