Tennessee Highway Patrol Debunks Claim of Hitting Anti-ICE Protester with Vehicle in Memphis

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) released dashcam footage to dispute allegations that an officer struck an anti-ICE protester with a vehicle during a demonstration in Memphis that blocked traffic to protest federal immigration enforcement over the weekend.

On Sunday, hundreds marched in Memphis to protest immigration enforcement following the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good last week, the Minneapolis mother, who was shot by an ICE agent while interfering with a federal immigration enforcement operation after striking the ICE agent with her SUV.

The “ICE Out For Good” protest, organized by the group Indivisible Memphis, saw demonstrators block traffic and surround THP vehicles as officers attempted to maneuver through the crowd.

Sunday’s protest led to the arrest of at least one woman, who was seen on video attempting to open the door and banging on the window of a THP patrol car.

Another protester told Fox 13 that he was struck by a THP vehicle as officers drove through the crowd, telling the outlet that the THP vehicle’s push bar “struck his legs, causing him to fall chest first onto the hood.”

That protester claimed he later went to the hospital to get checked out, further telling the outlet, “[I]t was completely unacceptable and inappropriate to drive into civilians.”

However, on Tuesday, THP released dash camera video of the altercation with the protester who claimed to be struck by an officer’s vehicle.

The 21-second-long video shows a man wearing a high-visibility vest stepping into the roadway in front of the THP vehicle with his hands up.

The THP officer can be heard in the video yelling at the protester in front of the vehicle to “move, get out of my way,” multiple times before the protester appears to grab hold of the push bar and swing himself under the vehicle, where he stayed for approximately three seconds before standing back up and walking away.

“Claims circulating on social media that a person was hit by a THP trooper in Memphis are false. Video shows the individual holding the vehicle, lying down, then standing up and leaving on his own. Peaceful protest is protected. Entering active roadways is not and risks lives,” THP wrote alongside the footage released on social media.
