U.S. John Rose (R-TN-06) has cosponsored the “Improve Well-Being for Veterans Act,” which seeks to prevent veteran suicide.
“Our nation’s veterans represent the very best of America, and they deserve our full support,” a press release quoted Rose saying.
“Yet, every day, approximately 20 veterans are lost to suicide. This heartbreaking reality does not have to continue, and I am proud to cosponsor this legislation that lays the groundwork to provide our veterans the support and care they need with the help of community partners and providers in their own neighborhoods.”
The legislation authorizes a three-year program to fund community, non-profit, and state agencies’ care for veterans. The funding would be available through grants authorized to support veterans’ mental health screenings, housing, peer support, financial planning, outreach, suicide prevention education, substance abuse reduction, and more, the press release went on to say.
“November is set aside to honor our veterans, and in that spirit, I urge passage of this important legislation to best leverage our resources for veterans’ care,” Rose said in the press release.
“I am committed to fighting this crisis until we reach a day when no veteran is lost to suicide.”
Rose cosponsored H.R. 3495 on November 14.
The bipartisan legislation was introduced by Representative Jack Bergman (R-Mich.-01) and will not require any new federal dollars, the press release said.
Rose’s Sixth District includes Cannon, Clay, Coffee, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, White, and Wilson counties as well as portions of Cheatham and Van Buren counties.
As The Tennessee Star reported last month, Rose said if his Democratic colleagues are going to impeach U.S. Republican President Donald Trump then they need solid evidence.
Rose said they do not.
“I hope we have the good judgement not to (impeach), but the predicate question is are we going to have a true inquiry or is it going to be a kangaroo court? And, as you know, the Congress has not yet voted to begin a formal impeachment inquiry and, as such, we have not evoked the historic standards that have been applied in past impeachment proceedings,” Rose told The Star during an appearance in Gallatin.
“The president is indicating the administration won’t cooperate unless those protections and that formal process is put in place. I think impeachment at its core is really a political process. The question is do Democrats believe that the politics are such that it would be in their best interests to proceed with impeachment? Frankly, I don’t see any evidence to support the extraordinary step of impeachment. I guess we will see in the days ahead what they choose to do.”
Rose went on to tell The Star that voters elected Trump president in 2016 knowing his nature and knowing he’s unconventional.

Perversely, this bill, if passed, may result in further social isolation of a veteran by his “family” and friends, resulting in an increase in suicide ideation and action.
Notice that there are 91 Democrats signed on as co-sponsors – that should tell you something right there.
