U.S. Representative John McGuire (R-VA-05) on Monday said that House Republicans are close to presenting one piece of legislation that would accomplish much of the agenda outlined by President Donald Trump on the campaign trail.
McGuire said Monday during an appearance on “The John Fredericks Show” that Republicans in the House could have their bill ready as early as Tuesday, which he told The Virginia Star publisher John Fredericks would be an historic pace.
“We are hopefully going to vote on this thing on Tuesday. That’s what the word on the street is,” said McGuire. “Of course, I’m new here, but someone said if we did that on Tuesday, it’d be like record time.”
Despite the prediction of a forthcoming vote, McGuire noted reaching consensus among the Republican caucus has presented a challenge for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA-04) and other members of House leadership.
“All the members of the conference – the Republican conference – up here have been in the negotiations. We’ve been going back and forth, back and forth. And there’s something in there for everybody, but there’s also something everyone wouldn’t like,” McGuire told Fredericks.
He added, “We’ve got to a place where it’s one beautiful bill in the House, and it’s a matter of getting everybody, hopefully, to vote for that thing on Tuesday, which is looking promising.”
McGuire’s remarks come as reports suggest the bill will not reach Trump’s desk until May, and that the U.S. Senate is moving forward with two bills as a backup plan, should Republicans in the House be unable to unify around one piece of legislation.
Trump has himself indicated he would prefer one bill, but would “live with” multiple pieces of legislation so long as they contain his agenda.
The Virginia Republican hinted at internal turmoil over the legislation, and acknowledged Johnson would need to sway “our friends over in the U.S. Senate, and get them on board as well,” but indicated the mandate voters handed Trump last November is greasing the wheels in Congress.
“He got a mandate. I mean, he got the popular vote, he got the electoral college, and he’s calling the shots,” said McGuire. “He’s a true leader, and many of these people in the House and the US senate wouldn’t be that where they are right now without Trump.”
