The Minnesota nonprofit Unidos MN, one of several hosting training sessions for activists opposed to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), previously received about $100,000 in donations to its former political action committee (PAC) from an organization primarily funded by Hungarian-American financier George Soros.
Unidos MN currently consists of two entities that are federally recognized as tax-exempt. These are Unidos MN Action, a 501 (c) (4) entity that engages with issue campaigns, referendums, direct lobbying, and candidate endorsement, while the Unidos Minnesota Education Fund engages in”community organizing, policy research and development, public education, and civic engagement,” while purporting to remain nonpartisan.
However, until September 23, 2024, there was also the Unidos We Win PAC, a political action committee (PAC) that made independent expenditures on behalf of political candidates.
During the 2020 election, the Unidos We Win PAC received about $100,000 from the Win Justice PAC, according to a series of campaign expenditure reports signed by its manager, Deepak Pateriya, who The Washington Free Beacon noted once led a nonprofit accused of involvement with organized protests against the first Trump administration.
The Win Justice PAC premiered in 2018 as a Democratic effort to win the midterm elections following President Donald Trump’s first victory in 2016, and ultimately raised $30 million, primarily funded by Soros. Other prominent donors included a PAC affiliated with the House Democrats, led at the time by U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-11).
Other individuals and groups behind Win Justice included Steven Spielberg, Planned Parenthood Votes, the Center for Community Change Action, the Color of Change PAC, and the Service Employees International Union.
Unidos MN advertised multiple training opportunities for activists via social media in December and January, including a “Legal Observer Training” on Wednesday, the same day Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot during a confrontation with ICE agents.
Multiple reports now indicate Good participated in anti-ICE activism through grassroots ICE Watch and “neighborhood patrol” efforts.
COPAL’s Immigrant Defense Network (IDN), another Minnesota-based group that reportedly received applications from 10,000 activists seeking training, has also advertised Unidos MN’s events on Wednesday.
“Here are more Constitutional Observer training opportunities being offered in the month of January to stand up in legal and informed ways,” wrote IDN in a post to Facebook. “Please consider joining a CO network, it does not need to be with the IDN. We are all in this fight together.”
IDN is managed by Edwin Torres DeSantiago, a Democratic political consultant who worked on Governor Tim Walz’s 2022 reelection campaign.
