Breitbart’s Matt Boyle Says He’s Ready to Serve Trump if Asked to Become Press Secretary

Matt Boyle, the Washington bureau chief for Breitbart News Network, said he would accept the position of White House Press Secretary if President Donald Trump asked him to take the job, while emphasizing that he is not actively seeking the position.

Boyle made the remarks while speaking Monday on The Michael Patrick Leahy Show, after host Michael Patrick Leahy publicly recommended him to replace Karoline Leavitt, who is set to leave the position at the end of August.

“I haven’t had any conversations with the president or with the White House about this,” Boyle said. “I know a lot of serious people out there, yourself included, have floated my name for it. I’m honored to be part of the discussion.”

“I have no idea if I’m really being considered or not, and who knows? But the fact that people are out there talking about it is amazing and incredible and a great honor. I think President Trump is one of the most transformational presidents in American history. I think he’s gonna go down, when we look back on this all, right up there with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. He’s gonna be a top three president in American history, and the fact that I’ve got to know him pretty well over the course of his time in the lead-up to and during both of his presidencies…has just been a great honor. Honestly, anything I can do to help the cause, I’m gonna continue to do,” he added.

Boyle said he remains happy at Breitbart, which he said is experiencing “a record-breaking year” in audience engagement and growth. He also noted that his work has recently taken him overseas to interview world leaders.

“I’m very happy where I am at Breitbart,” Boyle said. “Life is very good where I am right now.”

Still, Boyle made clear that he would serve if Trump asked.

“I’m not gunning for it, but if the president ever did call and ask, of course the answer’s, ‘Yes, sir, Mr. President,’” Boyle said. “Any president, by the way. I don’t care who they are. I’m a very patriotic person, so if I can ever help my country, I will.”

Boyle said his more than 15 years in journalism, particularly in conservative and new media, could give him a different perspective at the White House.

“I know I’ve got a unique set of skills,” he said. “I know I would do the job very differently than I think a lot of other people have in the past.”

He pointed specifically to the Trump administration’s efforts to expand access for new-media journalists, saying he would seek to build on that approach.

“I would bring that kind of a perspective to this,” Boyle said. “I would try to bring in even more voices and really double down, triple down, quadruple down on what President Trump has done.”

Boyle also argued that his background as a journalist could help the White House identify and communicate stories that he believes receive insufficient attention from the broader media.

“I know what journalists need,” Boyle said. “Journalists know what journalists need, and they know how I know what journalists need to do their stories. I have an eye for news.”

He said the administration has “millions of amazing stories” about Trump and argued that the next press secretary should help bring them to the public.

“Hopefully whoever it is, is gonna help get those stories out,” Boyle said.

“I know a lot of people across the establishment media were freaking out that they were seeing my name in [the mix] and whatnot, but I actually think that a lot of people in the media would actually like it to have a real journalist in the position,” he added.

Despite the speculation surrounding his name, Boyle repeatedly emphasized that he has not had formal discussions about the position and is not looking to leave Breitbart.

“Whatever the president decides, I’m on board with, okay?” he said. “I’m not in this for me. It’s not about me. It’s about the cause and about these amazing stories.”

Boyle said that if Trump wanted to discuss the position, he would be ready.

“If he ever wanted to have a conversation, he’s got my number. He could give me a call,” Boyle said. “We’ll have a great conversation about it. I’ve got a million ideas.”
