The mother of tenant organizer and housing advocate Cea Weaver, who has said homeownership is a “weapon of white supremacy,” reportedly owns a home valued at over $1.6 million in Nashville, according to the New York Post.
Weaver (pictured above, right) was tapped by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani last week as Director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, which, according to Mamdani’s office, “will serve as a central coordinating body to defend tenants’ rights, stand up to landlords, and ensure city agencies act swiftly on behalf of renters facing unsafe or illegal conditions.”
Since Weaver joined the Mamdani administration, a number of her past remarks and social media posts have come to light, including one post where she wrote, “Private property including any kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy.”
Weaver has also gone on the record arguing that property should be treated as a “collective good.”
This, as Weaver’s mother, a Vanderbilt University German Studies professor, reportedly owns a Nashville home with an estimated value of $1,659,300, according to the U.S. real estate marketplace app Zillow.
The New York Post reports that Weaver’s mother, Celia Applegate, and her partner, fellow Vanderbilt University History professor David Blackbourn, purchased the property located at 2004 25th Ave S in Nashville for $814,000 in 2012.
The 3-bedroom, 2-bath single-family home offers 3,400 square feet of living space on an 8,712-square-foot lot and would rent for an estimated $5,464 per month, according to Zillow.
Weaver’s father, Stewart Weaver, is also a reported homeowner, landlord, and manages rental property, independent reporting indicates.
“Weaver should begin spreading the warmth of collectivism by demanding that her parents vacate that home and turn it over to The People,” journalist Gary Weiss quipped on X.
