The Tennessee Star on Monday obtained an image showing the current balance for the Truist Bank account opened by State Representative Lee Reeves (R-Franklin) in order to run for U.S. House District 7, confirming the candidate kept his recent promise to jump-start his campaign with $300,000 of his personal funds.
Reeves’ campaign bank account shows a balance of $300,000, resulting from two wire transfers: one for $270,000 last Wednesday and the second for $30,000 last Friday.
Noting the short notice of the campaign to fill the vacancy caused by former U.S. Representative Mark Green’s abrupt retirement from Congress, Reeves announced his plan to spend $300,000 of his own money last Wednesday during an appearance on The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.
“I am committed to this race and I’m committed to winning this race, so I’m going to put about $300,000 in of my own funds,” Reeves told Michael Patrick Leahy, the editor-in-chief of The Star.
Reeves told Leahy he was committing his own money to the campaign to send a positive message to voters and donors.
“It is important to let people know how committed I am to this race, and let donors know that too, because I’m going to be asking people for their treasure and I want them to know that I have invested along with them,” said Reeves, before later acknowledging a pragmatic benefit of the cash injection.
“Most congressional races take a year,” Reeves told Leahy. “This will be 60 days for the primary, and so we have to get our message out as quickly as we can and effectively as we can, and we’ll need funds to do that, of course.”
Reeves added that, despite the possible cash advantage, the candidate “will be out there every single day working, just like I will be up in Congress.”
The confirmation of Reeves’ transfer of $300,000 comes on the heels of a series of prominent endorsements from elected Republicans in Williamson County, as well as State Representative Aron Maberry (R-Clarksville), who endorsed Reeves on Monday.
Describing Reeves as a “man of faith, conviction, and action” in his endorsement, Maberry said of his colleague, “I’ve seen firsthand that he leads with integrity and never backs down from doing what’s right.”
A total of eight candidates have joined the race for the Republican Party nomination to succeed Green, who on Monday endorsed Matt Van Epps, a veteran who recently worked as commissioner for the Tennessee Department of General Services.
