Tennessee immigration laws passed by the General Assembly earlier this year took effect on Tuesday, including legislation authorizing state grant funding for law enforcement agencies who sign 287(g) agreements to assist U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE), as well as legislation prohibiting illegal immigrants from legally driving in Tennessee, where they are barred from applying for a driver’s license, by using a driver’s license issued by another state.
Among the legislation passed during the special session called by Governor Bill Lee earlier this year was Senate Bill 2, which authorizes the creation of the Centralized Immigration Enforcement Division (CIED) within the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS), where the new division’s chief executive will manage collaboration and communication with federal immigration officials, create statewide immigration enforcement strategies, and coordinate the “participation in federal immigration programs” by local law enforcement.
