President Donald Trump nominated four individuals to serve on the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors on Tuesday.
TVA’s nine-member board is nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. Each member serves a term of five years.
Alabamian Randall Jones and Tennesseans Lee Beaman, Mitch Graves, and Jeff Hagood were nominated by Trump to serve on the board of the nation’s largest federally owned electric utility corporation, according to a White House press release.
Trump’s four new nominations follow his firings of three TVA board members since he took office in January.
In March, Trump terminated Board Members Joe Ritch and L. Michelle Moore, and then went on to fire Board Member Beth Geer last month. All members fired by Trump were appointed by former President Joe Biden.
Trump’s termination of the two TVA board members in March left the corporation with only four members, fewer than the minimum number of five required to approve new policies at quarterly public board meetings.
Geer’s termination last month left TVA with three board members.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee applauded Trump’s nominations of three Tennesseans to serve on the TVA Board, saying, “These appointees will bring the strong leadership needed to aggressively pursue American energy dominance — with safe, reliable nuclear energy at the forefront.”
U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN-03) also celebrated the president’s nominations, saying he is “confident that once all three of President Trump’s highly qualified nominees are confirmed, the new TVA board will work quickly to ensure TVA continues to power America’s Nuclear Renaissance.”
“TVA now has an excellent opportunity to lead the way in developing next-generation small modular reactor technologies that will be essential to creating America’s New Nuclear Future, which will power our nation, surge our economy, create countless new jobs, and ensure we lead the entire world in new nuclear,” Fleischmann added.
TVA’s board restructuring comes as the company also underwent a leadership change earlier this year, with Jeff Lyash retiring as CEO and being succeeded in the role by Don Moul.
