Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed Vice President JD Vance’s pledge to combat fraud in taxpayer-funded government programs, joining 25 other governors in supporting the Trump administration’s nationwide effort to crack down on waste, fraud, and abuse.

Lee announced his support for the pledge in a post on X, saying he was honored to lead members of the Republican Governors Association (RGA) in backing the initiative.

“Fraud against taxpayers is unacceptable, [and] every level of government has a responsibility to prevent it,” Lee wrote.

The pledge, titled “The Vice President’s Pledge to Protect Americans from Fraud,” calls on state leaders to work with the Trump administration to prevent fraudulent payments, protect vulnerable Americans, and hold individuals who exploit public benefit programs accountable.

The pledge outlines six commitments, including protecting vulnerable Americans such as the elderly, indigent, and disabled from those seeking to exploit them; ensuring taxpayer-funded programs serve law-abiding Americans rather than illegal aliens or fraudsters; and preventing individuals from using government benefits to purchase mansions or luxury vehicles.

It also calls on public agencies and officials at every level of government to coordinate efforts to identify and stop fraud before taxpayer dollars are distributed.

The pledge further commits signatories to ensuring fraudsters face justice in court, with convicted offenders imprisoned and permanently barred from receiving additional taxpayer-funded benefits. It also calls for illegal aliens who commit fraud to be promptly arrested, prosecuted, imprisoned, and deported to prevent them from continuing to exploit taxpayer-funded programs.

Lee was among 22 Republican governors who signed the pledge.

Tennessee Republican gubernatorial nominee and U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) also supported the initiative.

“I am glad to support [Vice President Vance’s] pledge in the fight against fraud,” Blackburn wrote on X. “Thank you [President Trump] and [the White House Fraud Task Force] for working to protect hardworking American taxpayers. Fraudsters be warned.”

Blackburn has previously promised on the campaign trail to work with members of the Tennessee General Assembly to spearhead a “Tennessee DOGE” initiative aimed at identifying waste, fraud, and government bloat if elected.
