Tennessee Names New Department of Transportation Leader

Will Reid

Governor Bill Lee named Will Reid as the next commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).

“Will Reid is a proven leader whose unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation has elevated the work of TDOT and the future of transportation in Tennessee,” Lee said.

“His deep understanding of our state’s infrastructure needs, coupled with a track record of driving efficiency and transparency, makes him the right person to lead TDOT into its next chapter of service to Tennesseans,” the governor stated.

Lee made this announcement last week, following Butch Eley’s resignation from this position in June. Eley cited his desire to spend more time with his family as the reason for stepping away.

“Deputy Governor Eley has played an important role in advancing Tennessee’s infrastructure efforts, and his work has positioned the state for continued progress,” Lee said.

The governor stated he was “confident” in Reid to carry the TDOT in “the years ahead under his leadership.”

Before this promotion, Reid (pictured above) served as TDOT’s chief engineer and deputy commissioner since 2022, according to Lee’s press release.

Reid, who is from Bartlett, has been with the department since 2014 when he took the job as TDOT’s director of construction. Prior to joining TDOT, Reid worked as a transportation engineering consultant for over 15 years.

Lee’s press release states the new TDOT Commissioner played a crucial role in developing the department’s first-ever 10-Year Project Plan and in accelerating the department’s project delivery time.

According to the press release, Reid has cultivated a culture of timely decision-making and a results-driven performance. Furthermore, it says he has supported a high standard that reflects TDOT’s core goal of “what gets started, gets finished.”
