President Donald Trump on Wednesday celebrated progressive Abdul El-Sayed’s win in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary, hailing it as a boon to Republicans.
El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., in the Democratic primary. What had been expected to be a clear win for him, however, ended up being a close contest that the Associated Press did not call until Wednesday morning. He will face former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., in the general election.
Trump, for his part, suggested that El-Sayed’s win was a benefit to Rogers.
“Great news for the Republican Party. El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in his race with the Socialist,” he posted on Truth Social. “As usual, the Polls were way off on this one. She was not expected to do nearly as well as she did. Now, the Dumocrats crazy policies will only get worse!”
Rogers, for his part, has seized on El-Sayed’s win, saying it made the race a choice between “common sense” and “complete insanity.”
The race is expected to be one of the most hotly contested in the battle for the Senate in November.
New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand issued a statement to journalist Andrew Desiderio after El-Sayed won, saying they are backing him.
“Abdul El-Sayed has run an energetic campaign that inspired thousands of Michiganders across the state, with a clear focus on lowering costs and standing up for working families,” they said.
“Democrats are united by a common purpose: putting a check on Donald Trump by defeating his Republican enablers and taking back the Senate. We look forward to working with Abdul and Democrats across Michigan to win this seat in November,” the senators added.
