Trump to Seek $80B in Iran War Funding: Report

The Trump administration will soon request $80 billion funding for the Iran war, Politico reported, citing “five people familiar with the matter.”

Administration officials reportedly told Republicans on Capitol Hill that the request would come this week. The news comes as Trump increasingly pressures the Senate to change its rules to pass key legislation.

Trump on Wednesday canceled a planned signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill, saying he wouldn’t approve the legislation until Congress passed the SAVE America Act, a marquis voter ID bill.

He later attended a lunch with Senate Republicans, during which he got into an argument with Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., over the Iran war. Cassidy previously voted with Democrats on a war powers resolution that would have forced Trump to break off the conflict.

Polling data has shown the public prefers a swift end to the conflict, rather than a protracted war for greater concessions, even as they doubt the merits of the proposed deal.

On Wednesday, Trump held a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office. Trump has been critical of America’s European allies since the start of the Iran War due to the lack of help.

“I know there have been isolated cases about which you are really disappointed,” Rutte said, according to NewsNation. “But generally speaking, your European allies have been there.”

The conflict with Iran has been going on for nearly four months. A new poll shows that the majority of Americans do not support it.

A new Quinnipiac Poll released on Wednesday showed 60% of Americans think America’s military actions against Iran have not been worth it.

“After months of diplomatic fits and starts, global economic repercussions and a broad loss of life in the region, a majority of voters make their feelings clear: the Iran war was a bad idea,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy.
