Law enforcement arrested Lewisburg City Manager Roy Haislip on Wednesday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced.
Haislip faces aggravated burglary, theft of property, and stalking charges. He was taken into the Marshall County Jail and issued a $10,000 bond, TBI said.
In May, TBI started an investigation in Haislip after the agency learned about the city manager allegedly contacting another city employee despite the person asking Haislip to stop.
While doing its investigation, TBI discovered Haislip (pictured above) had allegedly broken into the city employee’s home and stolen items belonging to the person.
In reaction to the arrest, Mayor Jim Bingham said the city was made aware of Haislip’s arrest. He called it a “serious and troubling development” for Lewisburg’s community.
Bingham pointed out that the alleged actions of Haislip “occurred wholly outside of his duties as city manager.”
“None of the allegations involve his work as City Manager, nor are any of the allegations alleged to have occurred during work hours, or involve any misuse of city time, property, or authority,” the mayor explained.
Bingham stated while the city did not approve of Haislip’s alleged actions, it was essential to give him the “presumption of innocence.”
“The charges brought forward are allegations, and Mr. Haislip is entitled to due process under the law,” he noted.
The mayor said the city will cooperate with law enforcement as the legal case unfolds.
With all this being said, Bingham stated Lewisburg continued to operate without interference.
“We understand the gravity of this moment and the concern it may cause. The City Council and leadership team are taking all necessary steps to maintain the integrity of our government and to support our community through this process,” the mayor said.
“Our priority is justice, fairness, and the well-being of the people of Lewisburg,” he added.
