AG Jonathan Skrmetti Announces End of Biden-Era DOJ Investigation into Tennessee State Agencies

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti and his office on Tuesday announced the conclusion of a Biden-era investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) into two state agencies who were accused of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). 

Following an investigation that began in 2023, Skrmetti’s office on Tuesday wrote in a press release that the DOJ had “erroneously alleged violations” of the ADA by the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners (TBLE) and the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program (TLAP), which it previously accused of discriminating against a man who was prescribed a medication for opioid use disorder.

Federal Judge Delays Deadlines for Human Smuggling Case Against Kilmar Abrego Garcia amid Uganda Deportation Effort

Against the wishes of Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s criminal defense attorneys, U.S. District Court Judge Waverly Crenshaw on Monday granted prosecutors’ request to delay the deadline for their response to Abrego Garcia’s recent claims of vindictive prosecution.

Crenshaw granted prosecutors’ motion in a three-sentence ruling, stating that the Saturday supplemental filing was adequate cause to move their deadline back from September 2 to September 15. The judge also moved the date for Abrego Garcia’s attorneys to file another response from September 9 to September 15.

‘Activist’ Judge Paula Xinis, Overseeing Kilmar Abrego Garcia Lawsuits, was Partner at Law Firm Who Sued over Death of Freddie Gray

U.S. District Court Judge Paula Xinis, who oversees both lawsuits filed by Kilmar Abrego Garcia against U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, a decade ago was criticized by conservatives during her confirmation process due to her previous position a partner at the law firm retained to sued City of Baltimore. 

Though not part of the case, Xinis was a partner at the firm, Murphy, Falcon and Murphy, when it successfully obtained a $6.4 million settlement from Baltimore for the death of Freddie Gray, who allegedly fled from police and was found with an illegal switchblade knife before dying from a severe injury to his spinal cord while in police custody.

New Illinois Law Forces Universities to Dispense Abortion Pills on Campus

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, signed legislation into law on Friday requiring all public colleges and universities in the state to dispense abortion pills to students.

The bill amended the state’s Public Higher Education Act to include a requirement for all institutions of higher education in the state that offer student health services to employ a medical professional capable of prescribing abortion pills and to provide the pills on campus if the school has a pharmacy beginning in the current 2025-2026 academic year. The institutions must also openly display abortion options on the school’s healthcare website and must refer students to outside abortion providers if the institution is incapable of providing the service.

Majority of California Dems Think Kamala Harris Should Pass on Another White House Run: Poll

The majority of California Democrats do not want former Vice President Kamala Harris to make another White House run in 2028, according to a UC Berkeley/Los Angeles Times poll released Tuesday.

Almost two-thirds of registered voters in California and 51% of Democrats said Harris should not seek the presidency again following her two failed White House bids in 2020 and 2024, according to the survey. Meanwhile, roughly 45% of California’s registered voters said they were “very” or “somewhat” enthusiastic about the prospect of Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom running for president, while 36% said the same about Harris.

University of Michigan Closes Its Child Sex-Change Clinic

The University of Michigan announced Monday it is halting transgender hormone therapy and puberty blockers for minors after receiving a federal subpoena.

The university’s Michigan Medicine facility “will no longer provide gender affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications” to minors due to a federal investigation as well as “external threats and risks,” the school said in a statement. The school said it had “received a federal subpoena as part of a criminal and civil investigation into” such procedures.

Judge Tosses Utah GOP Map over ‘Partisan Gerrymandering,’ Orders Districts Redrawn

A Utah judge threw a wrench into the Republican Party’s plan for a clean sweep of the state’s congressional seats on Monday, striking down the GOP-drawn map as illegal.

District Court Judge Dianna Gibson ruled that Utah’s congressional map, adopted in 2021, must be redrawn because the GOP-controlled legislature violated voter-approved safeguards against “partisan gerrymandering” when creating the map. The ruling is the latest in the escalating national redistricting battle, as both Democrats and Republicans vie for additional congressional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.

RFK Jr. Says Agency Will Reveal Causes of Autism in September

Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday he’s on track to identify “interventions” that are “certainly causing autism” and possible ways of addressing them by September. In April, Kennedy vowed to find the cause of growing rates of autism, calling it an “epidemic” that “dwarfs the COVID epidemic.”   President Trump asked Kennedy for a progress update during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, saying, “The autism is such a tremendous horror show. CBS News   President Trump said Tuesday the federal government would seek the death penalty for murders committed in Washington, D.C. It’s the latest move in a federal crackdown on crime, with Washington as a test case, as the president ramps up federal law enforcement efforts in Washington and seeks to establish forces in each state’s National Guard to be ready on short notice to address civil unrest. The president on Monday signed a crime-focused executive order that included a directive to the defense secretary to organize these plans. “Anybody murders something in the capital, capital punishment,” Mr. Trump said during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday. “Capital, capital punishment. Trump Says He Plans to Rename Department of Defense

President Donald Trump said Monday that next week the U.S. Department of Defense could once again return to an earlier name: War Department, a moniker it hasn’t used since 1949.

“You know, we call it the Department of Defense, but between us, I think we’re going to change the name,” Trump said during a meeting with South Korea’s president. “If you people behind me want to take a little vote and change it back to what it was when we used to win wars all the time, that’s OK with me … We want defense but we want offense too, OK?”

New Poll Shows Virginia Gubernatorial Race Tightening

A new poll is signaling that Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is closing in on her Democrat opponent in the Virginia governor race.

The Roanoke College poll showed Democrat gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger leading Earle-Sears 46% to 39% in the category of likely Virginia voters. That is a significant diminishment from May where Spanberger was leading by 43% compared to Earle-Sears’s 26%. The newest poll also shows 14% of surveyed likely voters were undecided, and 1% would not be voting for either Spanberger or Earle-Sears. Roanoke College is a private liberal arts school located in Salem, Virginia.
